Pieter Van Ruijven
Pieter Claesz. van Ruijven (1624 – August 7, 1674) is best known as Johannes Vermeer's patron for the better part of the artist's career. Van Ruijven was born in Delft, the son of a brewer and a Remonstrant. In 1653 he married Maria de Knuijt. The couple had one daughter named Magdalena, born in 1655. Like his father, he worked for the city institution, the ''Camer van Charitate'' (1668–1672). In 1657, he lent Vermeer 200 guilders. In 1680 his daughter Magdalena van Ruijven married Jacob Abrahamsz Dissius, a bookbinder. His father owned a printing press on the Market square, close to Maria Thins. Van Ruijven died in Delft, aged about fifty. Magdalena had 20 of Vermeer's works in her estate at her death, inherited from her father. Magdalena van Ruijven died in 1682, one year after her mother. Tracy Chevalier
Tracy Rose Chevalier (born 19 October 1962) is an American-British novelist. She is best known for her second novel, '' Girl with a Pearl Earring'', which was adapted as a 2003 film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. Personal background Chevalier was born on 19 October 1962, in Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of Douglas and Helen (née Werner) Chevalier. Her father was a photographer who worked with ''The Washington Post'' for more than 30 years. Her mother died in 1970, when Chevalier was eight years old. John Michael Montias
John Michael Montias (3 October 1928 – 26 July 2005) was a French-born American economist and art historian, known for his contributions to cultural economics, particularly related to Dutch Golden Age painting. Montias was part of the Annales School of historians. He was Professor of Economics Emeritus at Yale University. Career Born in Paris to Jewish parents, Montias was sent alone to the United States at a young age in 1940, in order to escape the Battle of France during World War II. He settled in Buffalo, New York, and attended the Nichols School there. He is known to have volunteered at the Albright–Knox Art Gallery around that time. Montias studied at Columbia University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1947, a Master of Arts in 1950, and Doctor of Philosophy in Economics in 1958. ''Girl with a Pearl Earring'' is a 2003 drama film directed by Peter Webber from a screenplay by Olivia Hetreed, based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier. Scarlett Johansson stars as Griet, a young 17th-century servant in the household of the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (played by Colin Firth) at the time he painted '' Girl with a Pearl Earring'' (1665) in the city of Delft in Holland. ''Girl with a Pearl Earring'' is a 1999 historical novel written by Tracy Chevalier. Set in 17th-century Delft, Holland, the novel was inspired by local painter Johannes Vermeer's '' Girl with a Pearl Earring''. Chevalier presents a fictional account of Vermeer, the model and the painting. The novel was adapted into a 2003 film of the same name and a 2008 play. In May 2020, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a new dramatisation of the novel. Background Tracy Chevalier's inspiration for the novel was a poster of Johannes Vermeer's '' Girl with a Pearl Earring''. Jan Porcellis (1580/84 Ghent – 29 January 1632 Zoeterwoude) was a Dutch marine artist in the seventeenth century. His works initiated a "decisive transition from early realism to the tonal phase", fostering a new style and subject in marine painting by focusing on overcast skies and rough waters, a radical break from maritime art's previous focus on the grandeur of ships in historical settings. Johannes Vermeer

Emanuel De Witte
Emanuel de Witte (1617–1692) was a Dutch perspective painter. In contrast to Pieter Jansz Saenredam, who emphasized architectural accuracy, De Witte was more concerned with the atmosphere of his interiors. Though few in number, de Witte also produced genre paintings. Life De Witte was born in Alkmaar and learned geometry from his father a schoolmaster. He joined the local Guild of St Luke in 1636. After a stay in Rotterdam, he moved to Delft and studied with Evert van Aelst. In 1651 de Witte settled in Amsterdam where his first wife, Geerje Arents, died in 1655. He then married a 23-year-old orphan, Lysbeth van der Plas, who exercised a bad influence on de Witte's adolescent daughter. In December 1659 both were arrested for theft from a neighbour.
