Piet De Bekker
Petrus Johannes Josephus Maria (Piet) de Bekker (17 April 1921, Empel – 5 January 2013, Breda) was a Dutch politician. De Bekker started his career as a civil servant in his native municipality of Empel en Meerwijk. Subsequently he worked in 's-Hertogenbosch, The Hague, Zwolle, and Breda. From 1972 to 1985, he was mayor of the former municipality of Wanroij. He was related to former KVP MP and former alderman of Empel en Meerwijk Leo de Bekker. His son, Felix, was an alderman for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) in Etten-Leur. Empel
Empel is a village and former municipality, which is now a quarter of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Dutch province of North Brabant. History Archaeological evidence shows Celtic and Roman traces in the area. The site of a Roman temple was of special interest. In medieval times there were two Lordships ( heerlijkheid) in the area. The Lordship of Empel and the Lordship of Meerwijk, but as they were always in one hand, they became known as Lordship of Empel en Meerwijk. The center was in the village now called Oud-Empel. Empel en Meerwijk Castle, the seat of the Lord of Empel en Meerwijk, was in an area called 'Het Slot', Dutch for 'The Castle'. When Empel village was moved later on, it came to lie inside the new Empel village. During the Eighty Years' War the area suffered greatly, because it was in the frontline from 1579 till 1609, and then again from 1621-1629. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Etten-Leur
Etten-Leur () is a municipality in the Dutch province North Brabant. Its name is a combination of the two villages from which the municipality originally acrose: Etten and Leur. History The villages were always part of one municipality, originally called "Etten c.a." (cum annexis), this later to change to "Etten en Leur". The current name was adopted in 1968. By that time, the villages had grown into one. Both villages, created in the Middle Ages, were relatively prosperous during the period of the Dutch Republic, the exception being the period of the Eighty Years' War in which the area was a major battleground. This prosperity was caused by the fact that Etten was a centre for the production of peat, and Leur was a local trading port, as it had a harbour. Decline in economic importance marked both villages during the nineteenth century. In 1836 Arnold Damen left Leur in order to work as a missionary in the United States. The Christian Democratic Appeal ( nl, Christen-Democratisch Appèl, ; CDA) is a Christian-democratic political party in the Netherlands. It was originally formed in 1977 from a confederation of the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party and the Christian Historical Union; it has participated in all but three cabinets since it became a unitary party. Breda () is a city and municipality in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant.
