Pierre Fourier
Peter Fourier (french: link=no, Pierre Fourier, ; 30 November 15659 December 1640) was a French canon regular who is honored as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Foregoing offers of high office, he served for many years as an exemplary pastor in the village of Mattaincourt in the Vosges. He was a strong proponent of free education and also helped to found a religious congregation of canonesses regular dedicated to the care of poor children, developing a new pedagogy for this. Early life Fourier was born on 30 November 1565 in the village of Mirecourt, in what was then the Duchy of Lorraine, a part of the Holy Roman Empire (now the French department of Vosges), which was a bulwark of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. He was the eldest of the three sons of a cloth merchant and his wife, who were faithful Catholics. Mattaincourt
Mattaincourt () is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. Inhabitants are called ''Mattaincurtiens''. Geography Mattaincourt lies on the southern part of the Lorraine Plateau, in a wooded area of gentle hills known as the Vôge. It is some to the east-northeast of Vittel and west of Épinal. The river Madon flows through the commune on its way north to join the Moselle near Nancy. History Etymology The name Mattaincourt is a latinate one which comes from Martin Court, or the domain (Latin "curtis") of Martin. The Martin in question must have been part of the local Gallo-Roman establishment: the neighbouring village of Hymont is believed to have belonged to a Frank named Hindonis.
