Pierre-Charles Marcel
Biography Pierre-Charles Marcel (1910–1992) was a leading French Reformed Protestant Christian pastor and philosopher who studied under France's leading evangelical-confessional mind, Auguste Lecerf, M. Auguste Lecerf (1873–1943). Marcel was sent to the Netherlands by Lecerf to study Christian philosophy under Herman Dooyeweerd. His ultimate aim was to translate the Dutchman’s magnum opus – :nl:Reformatorische wijsbegeerte, Reformatorische wijsbegeerte – into French for the benefit of French-speaking Christians. Other duties, and a world war, ultimately scuppered this plan and, when an American translation of the massive three volume work was eventually published in the 1950s, Marcel abandoned his initial plan. During the fifties, however, he undertook a study of Dooyeweerd in two degree courses and produced what amounts to a brilliant summary in French of the Dutchman’s great work. Gabriel Marcel
Gabriel Honoré Marcel (7 December 1889 – 8 October 1973) was a French philosopher, playwright, music critic and leading Christian existentialist. The author of over a dozen books and at least thirty plays, Marcel's work focused on the modern individual's struggle in a technologically dehumanizing society. Though often regarded as the first French existentialist, he dissociated himself from figures such as Jean-Paul Sartre, preferring the term ''philosophy of existence'' or ''neo-Socrateanism'' to define his own thought. ''The Mystery of Being'' is a well-known two-volume work authored by Marcel. Early life and education Marcel was born on 7 December 1889 in Paris, France. Auguste Lecerf
Auguste Lecerf (1872–1943) was a French Reformed pastor of the Église réformée de France (''Reformed Church of France'') and a partly autodidact neo-Calvinist theologian. From 1927 onwards, he was dogmatics professor at the Protestant Faculty of Theology in Paris. As a specialist in Jean Calvin, he authored several books and articles on Reformed dogmatics. Early life Auguste Lecerf was born in London on September 18, 1872, to communards anti-clerical and agnostic parents who had sought refuge in England at the end of the Paris Commune in 1871. Herman Dooyeweerd
Herman Dooyeweerd (7 October 1894, Amsterdam – 12 February 1977, Amsterdam) was a professor of law and jurisprudence at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam from 1926 to 1965. He was also a philosopher and principal founder of Reformational philosophy with Dirk Vollenhoven, a significant development within the Neocalvinist (or Kuyperian) school of thought. Dooyeweerd made several contributions to philosophy and other academic disciplines concerning the nature of diversity and coherence in everyday experience, the transcendental conditions for theoretical thought, the relationship between religion, philosophy, and scientific theory, and an understanding of meaning, being, time and self.
