Pierre Philippe Jean Marie d'Orléans (4 November 1845 – 17 July 1919) was Duke of Penthièvre and a grandson of French king Louis Philippe I and of Brazilian Emperor Pedro I. Declining a proposal to marry into the Brazilian royal family, he chose a naval career and fathered two children without marrying. Prince Pierre was an officer in the Union and French Navies and a global traveler. In the 11th and 12th centuries the Countship of Penthièvre (''Breton language, Breton: Penteur'') in Brittany (now in the department of Côtes-d'Armor) belonged to a branch of the sovereign Duke of Brittany, House of Brittany. It initially belonged to the Count of Rennes, House of Rennes. Alan III, Duke of Brittany, gave it to his brother Eudes, Count of Penthièvre, Eudes in 1035, and his descendants formed a cadet branch of the ducal house. The geographical region of Brittany that constituted the holdings of Penthièvre correlate closely with the territories that constituted the early Breton kingdom of Domnonée. Henri of Orléans, Count of Paris (Henri Robert Ferdinand Marie d'Orléans; 5 July 1908 – 19 June 1999), was the Orléanist claimant to the defunct throne of France as Henry VI from 1940 until his death in 1999. Henri was the direct descendant of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, son of Louis XIII. He was also a descendant of Louis XIV through a female line, from his legitimized daughter Françoise Marie de Bourbon; as well as the great-great-grandson (by four different lines of descent) of Louis Philippe I.
