Pierce O'Brien-Butler
Pierce Edmond O'Brien-Butler (12 January 1877 – 15 January 1902) was an Irish rugby union international player. He won six caps between 1897 and 1900. Pierce was a member of a titled family, the Barons Dunboyne. His own branch of the family originated in County Tipperary, where they lived at Bansha Castle in the 18th century. County Tipperary ( ga, Contae Thiobraid Árann) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Munster and the Southern Region. The county is named after the town of Tipperary, and was established in the early 13th century, shortly after the Norman invasion of Ireland. The Second Boer War ( af, Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, , 11 October 189931 May 1902), also known as the Boer War, the Anglo–Boer War, or the South African War, was a conflict fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics (the South African Republic and the Orange Free State) over the Empire's influence in Southern Africa from 1899 to 1902. Following the discovery of gold deposits in the Boer republics, there was a large influx of "foreigners", mostly British from the Cape Colony. Paget O'Brien-Butler
Paget Terence O'Brien-Butler MC (1 August 1911 – 22 June 1952) was an Irish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. O'Brien-Butler was born at Wanowrie in British India (today a district of Pune) to Winifred Mary O'Brien and her husband CCharles Paget O'Brien Butler, an amateur jockey who finished fifth in the 1913 Grand National. He was educated at Clifton College, before attending the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy in 1931, whereupon he entered into the British Army as a Second Lieutenant with the Royal Artillery. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1934. He played club cricket in Ireland around his military commitments, playing for both Phoenix and Cork County. He played one first-class match for Ireland against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Dublin in 1936. Baron Dunboyne
Baron Dunboyne was a title first held by the Petit family some time after the Norman invasion of Ireland. History Dunboyne was part of the Lordship of Meath. The Petit family also had land holdings in Mullingar. In 1227, Ralph Petit became Bishop of Meath. In that capacity, he founded a priory of the Blessed Virgin in Mullingar and he endowed this establishment with the townland of Kilbraynan (or Kilbrena) in Dunboyne, along with the rectory of Dunboyne, its tithes and other ecclesiastical revenues. A century later, Thomas Butler, son of Theobald Butler, 4th Chief Butler of Ireland, married Sinolda, heiress of William le Petit. In 1324, Butler was created Baron Dunboyne by prescription. In this way, the Dunboyne properties and titles passed to the Butler dynasty, Butlers. In 1541, the barony was created by patent in the Peerage of Ireland. 1897 Home Nations Championship
The 1897 Home Nations Championship was the fifteenth series of the rugby union Home Nations Championship. Four matches were played between 9 January and 13 March. It was contested by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Wales only completed one match during this championship as the Welsh Rugby Union withdrew from the International Rugby Board in February 1897 due to the Gould Affair, and was therefore ineligible to play any further international matches. The rules at the time stated the final table would be decided on match points and then points scored. As all teams finished with two match points, the championship was theoretically drawn, but England claimed the title through their greater score, even though they lost their first two games and conceded more tries and points than any of the other three countries.Godwin (1984), pg 49.
