Pieni Tietosanakirja
''Pieni tietosanakirja'' ("The Small Encyclopedia") (1925-1928), published by Otava in four volumes, was the second Finnish-language encyclopedia. It followed the earlier, eleven-volume '' Tietosanakirja''. Being published more than 70 years ago, Project Runeberg considers the original edition of ''Pieni tietosanakirja'' to be in the public domain, at though this interpretation is contested by the letter of the relevant law. Otava also released two updated versions of the book, the first in 1952, the second in 1958–1959, both in four volumes. Otava (publisher)
Otava Publishing Company Ltd ( fi, Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava, sv, Förlagsaktiebolaget Otava) is a major Finnish publisher of books. It was founded in 1890 and now is the second largest in Finland. It publishes fiction, non-fiction, books for teenagers and children, multimedia and teaching materials. The number of new titles a year exceeds 400. Otava has also been at the forefront of encyclopedia-publishing in Finland, with many well-known series, such as the ''Otavan Suuri Ensyklopedia'' (Otava's Big Encyclopedia). Writers whose work Otava has published over the years include Frans Emil Sillanpää, Eino Leino, Paavo Haavikko, Pentti Saarikoski and Laila Hirvisaari. The parent company Otava Group also owns Suomalainen Kirjakauppa. The name "Otava" refers to the Big Dipper. Tietosanakirja
The ' ("Encyclopedia", lit. "knowledge word-book", "knowledge dictionary"), published in 11 volumes from 1909 to 1922, was the first Finnish language encyclopedia. It was published by ''Tietosanakirja-Osakeyhtiö'', a joint effort between Otava and WSOY. The name of the series was adopted into the Finnish language to mean all encyclopedias, so to differentiate, the series became colloquially known as ''Iso musta tietosanakirja'' ("the Big Black Encyclopedia"). It was followed by the abridged ', "Small Encyclopedia", published in 4 volumes, 1925–1928. Project Runeberg
Project Runeberg ( sv, Projekt Runeberg) is a digital cultural archive initiative that publishes free electronic versions of books significant to the culture and history of the Nordic countries. Patterned after Project Gutenberg, it was founded by Lars Aronsson and colleagues at Linköping University and began archiving Nordic-language literature in December 1992. As of 2015 it had accomplished digitization to provide graphical facsimiles of old works such as the '' Nordisk familjebok'', and had accomplished, in whole or in part, the text extractions and copyediting of these as well as esteemed Latin works and English translations from Nordic authors, and sheet music and other texts of cultural interest.
