Piece (graffiti)
Pieces, short for masterpieces, are a form of graffiti that involves large, elaborate and detailed letter forms. They are one of the main forms of modern graffiti, along with Tag (graffiti), tags and Throw up (graffiti), throw ups, and are the least controversial of the three and least likely to be seen as vandalism. Due to their size, pieces are almost always done in Aerosol paint, aerosol spray paint, but may use paint rollers for large fill-ins. Form Pieces tend to be large, with multi-coloured fills and outlines. They often incorporate highlights, shadows, and a background, and may use extensions, 3D effects, and sometimes characters. Because of their complexity and large size, pieces usually take a significant amount of time to plan and paint and therefore are often found on legal walls. Tag (graffiti)
Tags are one of the primary forms of graffiti, along with throw-ups and pieces. The act of writing a tag is known as tagging. Tags were the first form of modern graffiti, originating in New York City in the 1960s and 70s with artists such as TAKI 183 and Julio 204. and are often thought of as the simplest form of graffiti art, prioritising legibility and flow and are usually the form of graffiti that most artists start off with. Throw Up (graffiti)
Throw ups, or throwies, are a form of graffiti that fall between tags and pieces in complexity. The name comes from the way they are designed to be "thrown" onto a surface as quickly as possible. They are almost always done with aerosol paint. Form Throw ups are typically the writer's moniker in large "bubble-letters", with or without a fill. Throw ups without fills are called hollows. Throw ups are sometimes done using only the first two or three letters of the moniker in a throw up to quicken the process, especially if the writer uses a longer name. Throw ups are done with fast, pre-planned body movements to enhance speed. This speed means that writers can produce large amounts of throw ups in a short time, especially when compared with pieces. Paint Roller
A paint roller is a paint application tool used for painting large flat surfaces rapidly and efficiently. The paint roller typically consists of two parts: a "roller frame," and a "roller cover."
