Pickering Public Library
Pickering Public Library is the library system of Pickering, Ontario, Canada. The library was operational in separate branches since 1841, but officially launched as the Main Library in 1990 at the ''Central Branch''. There are also the ''George Ashe (formerly Petticoat)'' and ''Claremont'' branches which remain part of the Pickering Public Library. History The Pickering Public Library officially opened its doors on May 22, 1990, which is the Central Branch, after two years of construction in response to the Town of Pickering's growing needs. Prior to opening, there were various library branches including Greenwood, Claremont, Whitevale, Bay Ridges, Rouge Hill, Brougham, which was the first branch opened in 1841, and the formerly named Liverpool Branch until the official opening of the Central Branch. Pickering (2021 population 99,186) is a city located in Southern Ontario, Canada, immediately east of Toronto in Durham Region. Beginning in the 1770s, the area was settled by primarily ethnic British colonists. Pickering Town Centre (PTC) is a large regional shopping mall located in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. Opened in 1972 as Pickering Sheridan Mall, the mall has over 150 stores. History The mall opened in 1972 as the Sheridan Mall with 80 stores. Its first significant renovations were in 1998. The PTC underwent a $17 million renovation through 2008 and 2009. This included new floors, ceilings, lighting and seating areas. It has a modern look and features an additional elevator. On the morning of November 28, 2016, the Pickering Town Centre was flooded with water, causing the closure of the majority of the lower-level stores and Santa's Castle. The cause of the flooding was due to a broken water main. Most stores had reopened by December 1, 2016.
