Pick-Up (1975 Film)
''Pick-Up'' is a 1975 American film directed by Bernard Hirschenson, marketed as an exploitation film full of sexy hippies, but praised by some critics for deeper artistic qualities. Plot Two young women, free spirit Carol (Jill Senter) and introverted Maureen (Gini Eastwood) are hitchhiking when they are picked up by Chuck (Alan Long) in his mobile home. They disappear into the Florida Everglades where they have various symbolic experiences. Production It was the only feature film directed by Hirschenson, who was also an advertising man and documentary-maker. It was produced and distributed by Crown International Pictures. Critical reaction From 1975, ''Film Review Digest'' gives it a mixed review: recognising its artistic pretensions, it says the filmmakers went "just about as far as they could dare in a commercial context". Crown International Pictures (CIP) was an independent film studio and distribution company formed in 1959 by Newton P. Jacobs. History Jacobs was a branch head of RKO Pictures until 1947, when he formed Favorite Films, an organization which released films acquired from the studios which had originally produced them, long after their first run release. CIP became one of the first franchise distributors for American International Pictures (AIP) product. Like AIP, Crown International is primarily known for low-budget genre films, including; grindhouse cinema, biker films, exploitation films, and B-movie drive-in fare. An exploitation film is a film that tries to succeed financially by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are generally low-quality "B movies", though some set trends, attract critical attention, become historically important, and even gain a cult following. History Exploitation films may feature suggestive or explicit sex, sensational violence, drug use, nudity, gore, destruction, rebellion, mayhem, and the bizarre. Such films were first seen in their modern form in the early 1920s, but they were popularized in the 60s and 70s with the general relaxing of censorship and cinematic taboos in the U.S. and Europe. The Everglades is a natural region of tropical climate, tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, comprising the southern half of a large drainage basin within the Neotropical realm. Jodorowsky
Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky (; born 17 February 1929) is a Chilean-French avant-garde filmmaker. Best known for his 1970s films ''El Topo'' and '' The Holy Mountain'', Jodorowsky has been "venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts" for his work which "is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation". Born to Jewish-Ukrainian parents in Chile, Jodorowsky experienced an unhappy and alienated childhood, and so immersed himself in reading and writing poetry.
