Piccadilly, City And North East London Railway
__NOTOC__ The Piccadilly, City and North East London Railway (PC&NELR) was a tube railway in London proposed in 1902. The railway was to run from Southgate to Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush via Palmers Green, Tottenham, Stoke Newington, Dalston, Shoreditch, the City of London, the West End and Kensington. The PC&NELR was formed from the combination of three earlier railway schemes proposed in 1901; the Piccadilly and City Railway and the North East London Railway and part of the London United Electric Railway (LUER). The railway was supported by American financier J. P. Morgan and London United Tramways (LUT), whose network of tram routes in west London would provide passengers for the railway at Hammersmith. Although looked on favourably in Parliament, consideration of the PC&NELR's bills was delayed while they and a number of other tube railway bills were evaluated. Tunnelling Shield
A tunnelling shield is a protective structure used during the excavation of large, man-made tunnels. When excavating through ground that is soft, liquid, or otherwise unstable, there is a potential health and safety hazard to workers and the project itself from falling materials or a cave-in. A tunnelling shield can be used as a temporary support structure. It is usually in place for the short-term from when the tunnel section is excavated until it can be lined with a permanent support structure. The permanent structure may be made up of, depending on the period, bricks, concrete, cast iron, or steel. Although modern shields are commonly cylindrical, the first "shield", designed by Marc Isambard Brunel, was actually a large, rectangular, scaffold-like iron structure with three levels and twelve sections per level, with a solid load-bearing top surface. Sir Edgar Speyer, 1st Baronet (7 September 1862 – 16 February 1932) was an American-born financier and philanthropist. Barker 2004. He became a British subject in 1892 and was chairman of Speyer Brothers, the British branch of the Speyer family's international finance house, and a partner in the German and American branches. He was chairman of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL, forerunner of the London Underground) from 1906 to 1915, a period during which the company opened three underground railway lines, electrified a fourth and took over two more. Speyer was a supporter of the musical arts and a friend of several leading composers, including Edward Elgar, Richard Strauss and Claude Debussy. He was chairman of the Classical Music Society for ten years, and he largely funded the Promenade Concerts between 1902 and 1914. The Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (GNP&BR), also known as the Piccadilly tube, was a railway company established in 1902 that constructed a deep-level underground "tube" railway in London.A "tube" railway is an underground railway constructed in a cylindrical tunnel by the use of a tunnelling shield, usually deep below ground level. The GNP&BR was formed through a merger of two older companies, the Brompton and Piccadilly Circus Railway (B&PCR) and the Great Northern and Strand Railway (GN&SR). It also incorporated part of a tube route planned by a third company, the District Railway (DR). The combined company was a subsidiary of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL). Sir Clinton Edward Dawkins, (2 November 1859 – 2 December 1905) was a British businessman and civil servant. Life Dawkins was born in London, the son of Clinton George Dawkins, one time Consul-General in Venice. He was educated at Cheltenham College and Balliol College, Oxford. He succeeded Alfred Milner as private secretary to Chancellor of the Exchequer George Goschen in 1889. He later served overseas as undersecretary for finance in Egypt from 1895 to 1899. His final role was as financial advisor to Lord Curzon, Governor-General of India in 1899. During 1899, he accepted an offer from the financier John Pierpont Morgan of full partnership in the London branch of his firm, J. S. Morgan & Co., where he remained until his death in 1905.
