Pialligo (postcode: 2609) () is a rural suburb of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. The name ''Pialligo'' has been used for the area since at least 1820, and is probably of Aboriginal origin. It was also the name for the parish in the area. Streets in Pialligo are named with Aboriginal words. Beltana Road in Pialligo is home to many of Canberra's nurseries. Canberra Airport is located adjacent to Pialligo across Pialligo Avenue. Geology Quaternary alluvium covers the main western part of Pialligo. Calcareous shales from the Canberra Formation are deep underneath. The Woolshed Creek runs into the north end of Pialligo. This is a significant place, because in the bed of the creek the Rev W B Clarke first recognised Silurian fossils. These fossils were brachiopods, mostly ''Atrypa duntroonensis''. Pialligo Avenue
Pialligo Avenue is a major arterial road in Canberra, the Capital city of Australia. It forms part of the corridor linking the city to Canberra Airport at Pialligo, and Fairbairn, Canberra, Fairbairn. It is also the most direct route from Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Queanbeyan to the airport precinct. Completed in 2009, a $16 million upgrade of Pialligo Avenue associated with the expansion of the airport saw the road upgraded to dual carriageway standard between its western terminus at the Monaro Highway and the Brindabella Business Park. These works included a grade separated intersection providing access to the redeveloped passenger terminal via a loop road. Substantial upgrades were also carried out at the intersection with Fairbairn Avenue. An estimated 30,000 vehicles use the road daily. Majura (district)
The Majura District is a district of Canberra, with a population of 161 at the , excluding the suburb of Pialligo, which lies to the south of Canberra Airport. Apart from Pialligo, Majura District includes Canberra Airport and some farming but little residential development. Geography The Majura District is situated in the northeast corner of the ACT, to the east of the North Canberra district, Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura, north of the Molonglo River, west of Sutton Road and south of the New South Wales border. It is located in the Majura Valley, which is drained by Woolshed Creek. Majura is primarily covered by the Majura Field Firing Range, open grazing country and Canberra Airport. Walter Burley Griffin
Walter Burley Griffin (November 24, 1876February 11, 1937) was an American architect and landscape architect. He is known for designing Canberra, Australia's capital city and the New South Wales towns of Griffith, New South Wales, Griffith and Leeton, New South Wales, Leeton. He has been credited with the development of the L-shaped floor plan, the carport and an innovative use of reinforced concrete.
