Phylidonyris Niger
The white-cheeked honeyeater (''Phylidonyris niger'') inhabits the east coast and the south-west corner of Australia. It has a large white patch on its cheek, brown eyes, and a yellow panel on its wing. Taxonomy The white-cheeked honeyeater was described by Johann Matthäus Bechstein, Bechstein in 1811. Two subspecies are recognised: ''Phylidonyris niger niger'' in eastern Australia; and ''P. n. gouldii'' (Hermann Schlegel, Schlegel, 1872) in southwest Western Australia. The latter subspecies has a narrower white cheek-patch, slightly more black on the breast, and different vocalizations, which in future may lead to its classification as a separate species. The generic name ''Phylidonyris'' combines the term ''Phylidon'' or ''Philedon'', used by the French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1817 for the friarbirds (now placed in the genus ''Philemon (bird), Philemon''), with ''Cinnyris'' (Cuvier, 1816) for the sunbirds; the specific epithet derives from Latin ''niger'' 'black'. Johann Matthäus Bechstein
Johann Matthäus Bechstein (11 July 1757 – 23 February 1822) was a German naturalist, forester, ornithologist, entomologist, and herpetologist. In Great Britain, he was known for his treatise on singing birds (''Naturgeschichte der Stubenvögel'', ''Natural History of Cage Birds'', 1795). Biography Bechstein was born in Waltershausen in the district of Gotha in Thuringia. He studied theology for four years at the University of Jena, and spent time hunting and roaming the forests as opportunities permitted. After leaving school, he taught for some years, but gave teaching up to devote himself to outdoor pursuits. In 1795, he founded the school of forestry at Waltershausen, and in 1800, the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen made him the director of the forestry school at Dreissigacker near Meiningen in the neighbouring district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.
