Phoenix Stakes
The Phoenix Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event was established in 1902, and it was originally held at Phoenix Park. It used to be called the Phoenix Plate, and was informally known as "the 1500". It was initially contested over 5 furlongs. The race was renamed the Phoenix Stakes in 1956. It was given Group 2 status in 1971, and promoted to Group 1 level in 1979. The Phoenix Stakes was staged at Leopardstown in 1982. It returned to Phoenix Park with a new distance of 6 furlongs in 1983. Phoenix Park Racecourse closed in 1990, and the event switched to Leopardstown in 1991. It moved to the Curragh in 2002. Curragh Racecourse
The Curragh Racecourse -- usually referred to as simply the Curragh -- is one of Ireland's most important Thoroughbred racecourses. It is situated on the Curragh plain in County Kildare, between the towns of Newbridge and Kildare. History The name "Curragh" comes from the Irish language word ''Cuirreach'', meaning "place of the running horse". The first recorded race on the plain took place in 1727, but it was used for races before then. The first Derby was held in 1866, and in 1868 the Curragh was officially declared a horse racing and training facility by act of parliament. Racecourse redevelopment Redevelopment of the Curragh grandstand and racecourse facilities began in 2017 with completion due in time for commencement of the 2019 Irish Flat season. Smokey Lady
Smokey Lady (9 March 1977 – after 1982) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Racing only as a two-year-old in 1979 she won two of her five races including the Phoenix Stakes, which was then Ireland's premier race for juveniles. She was also placed in the Queen Mary Stakes and the Prix du Petit Couvert and ended the year as Ireland's top-rated two-year-old filly. She made no impact as a broodmare. Background Smokey Lady was a "compact" grey mare bred in Ireland. She was sent into training with Dermot Weld at the Curragh, County Kildare. She was ridden in most of her races by Wally Swinburn. David O'Brien (racehorse Trainer)
David O'Brien is a former Irish racehorse trainer. He was the son of the successful trainer Vincent O'Brien and Jacqueline O'Brien (), author and photographer. His primary successes included Assert, who won the Irish and French Derbies, and Secreto, Derby, defeating El Gran Senor El Gran Senor (21 April 1981 – 18 October 2006) was a champion American-bred Thoroughbred race horse, foaled at Windfields Farm (Maryland). Aviance (horse)
Aviance (6 May 1982 – after 2006) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was unbeaten in two races as a juvenile in 1984, including the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. In 1985 she failed to win or place in four races but ran well in defeat in several top-class races including the 1000 Guineas and the July Cup. After retiring at the end of the season she became a very successful broodmare, and is the female-line ancestor of many good winners. Background Aviance was a small, "lightly-built" chestnut mare with a narrow white blaze bred in Ireland by the Ballydoyle Stud. She raced for most of her career in the colours of the British businessman Robert Sangster and was trained in Ireland by David O'Brien. King Persian
King Persian (14 June 1981 – after 1999) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1983 he won a minor race on his debut and then recorded his biggest win in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. He was unplaced in his only other start that season and made little impact in three subsequent races over the next two years. After his retirement he had some success as a sire of National Hunt horses. Background King Persian was a chestnut horse bred in Ireland by the Oldtown Stud. He was a very late foal, being born on 14 une, meaning that he was younger than the vast majority of horses of his generation. As a yearling he was put up for auction and sold or 29,000 guineas. Gabriel Curran
Gabriel Curran (died 2008) was an Irish flat racing jockey. Curran rode the winners of two Irish Classic Races during his career as well as the English 2,000 Guineas on Nebbiolo in 1977. He rode for trainer Kevin Prendergast and after retiring as a jockey worked as an assistant trainer to Charlie Swan and ran a stud farm. Curran was born in Kells, County Meath and died suddenly in 2008. Sweet Emma (19 March 1980 – after 1998) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1982 she won two minor races in spring and then recorded her most important success with a victory in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. She went on to finish fourth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and ended the year as the best Irish-trained juvenile filly of her generation. After being transferred to race in England she failed to win at three but did finish third in the Leisure Stakes and fourth in the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare in Europe and Japan. Background Sweet Emma was a "lengthy, attractive" bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by the Hesmonds Stud. Vincent O'Brien (9 April 1917 – 1 June 2009) was an Irish horse racing, race horse horse trainer, trainer from Churchtown, County Cork, Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland. Patrick James John Eddery (18 March 1952 – 10 November 2015) was an Irish flat racing jockey and trainer. He rode three winners of the Derby and was Champion Jockey on eleven occasions. He rode the winners of 4,632 British flat races, a figure exceeded only by Sir Gordon Richards. Background Eddery was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, less than 2 miles from the Curragh Racecourse, and his birth was registered in Dublin. Achieved (13 May 1979 – 1993) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won four of his nine races in a track career which lasted from July 1981 to September 1982. As a two-year-old he was undefeated in three starts including the Phoenix Stakes and the Champagne Stakes and was rated the best horse of his generation in Ireland. In the following year he won the Tetrarch Stakes and later finished third in both the Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He was retired at the end of the year to become a breeding stallion but had no success as a sire of winners. Taffy Thomas (jockey)
Myrddin Lloyd "Taffy" Thomas ( 1945 – 12 January 2022) was a Welsh jockey who competed in Flat racing. Life and career Thomas was born in Caernarfon and began his career as a jockey in 1961. He rode 878 winners before retiring from race riding in 1990 and was particularly noted as a "lightweight" jockey who could ride horses carrying low weights in handicap races. In 1977 he won the Singapore Gold Cup on a horse called Sir Toby. His biggest wins came in the Vernons Sprint Cup in 1978 and the King's Stand Stakes in 1983.
