Philpott Lake
Philpott Lake is a reservoir in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is impounded by Philpott Dam. The lake is at an elevation of , covers an area of , and has a shoreline length of . Philpott Lake extends into Franklin County, Virginia, Franklin, Henry County, Virginia, Henry, and Patrick County, Virginia, Patrick counties, Virginia. It is bordered by of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed lands. The lake and Philpott Dam were created to control flooding along the Smith River (Virginia), Smith River, to generate hydroelectric power, and to provide recreational activities. Construction on Philpott Dam began in 1948 and was completed in 1952. Virginia state record lake trout and coho salmon were caught in Philpott Lake in 1966 and 1971, respectively. The last report of collection of a stocked Pacific salmon in this reservoir was in either late 1972 or January 1973, which may have been either a Chinook salmon or a coho. Franklin County is located in the Blue Ridge foothills of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 54,477. Its county seat is Rocky Mount. Franklin County is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The Roanoke River forms its northeast boundary with Bedford County. Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area
Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area is a Wildlife Management Area in Patrick and Henry counties, Virginia. Named for the fairy stones that are common in the area, it comprises several parcels surrounding much of Fairy Stone State Park and the Philpott Reservoir in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area includes steep slopes and a small amount of bottomland, including an marsh impoundment set aside for migrating waterfowl.
