Phillip E. Young
Philip Endicott "Skipper" Young (December 1, 1885 - June 17, 1955) was the founder of Titleist. Personal life Young was born on December 1, 1885, in Dorchester, Massachusetts to Rev. George H. Young, a Unitarian minister, and his second wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Augustus Bradford Endicott. He had a sister, Eleanor Guild. The family moved to Dedham, Massachusetts when Young was a child. Young earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the class of 1909. With his wife, Edith ( Ames), he had a son, Richard, born in 1916, and a daughter, Edith, born in 1911. He also had two sisters, Eleanor Guild and Shelia Young. Edith grew up about a half a mile away from Young. They both attended the Dedham Public Schools and were childhood sweethearts. The couple was married in 1910. Titleist
Titleist (pronounced "title-ist") is an American brand name of golf equipment produced by the Acushnet Company, headquartered in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, United States. The Titleist brand, established in 1932 by Phillip E. Young, focuses on golf balls and clubs. The name Titleist is derived from the word "titlist", which means "title holder". History Phillip E. Augustus Bradford Endicott
Augustus Bradford Endicott (September 10, 1818 – November 21, 1910) was a Massachusetts state legislator and sheriff of Norfolk County. Biography Endicott, the son of Elijah Endicott and Cynthia (Childs) Endicott, was born September 10, 1818, in Canton, Massachusetts. He was a direct descendant of Gilbert Endicott, who arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1658. Following an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Endicott moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts at age 21 where he was employed for ten years as a pattern maker in a foundry. In 1853, Endicott moved to Dedham, Massachusetts, and was appointed deputy sheriff of Norfolk County for Dedham the same year. He served in that position until 1885. In 1885, he was elected sheriff of Norfolk County, a position in which he served for ten years. Endicott represented Dedham in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1872 and 1874. Wamsutta Club
The Wamsutta Club is a private social club in New Bedford, Massachusetts, founded in 1866. It was a club for the affluent members of New Bedford's community, which at the time was supported by the flagging whaling industry as well as the up-and-coming textiles. The club was founded by Charles Warren Clifford, who organized an athletic club to play a new version of baseball. The social club was formally chartered in 1889. The present location was built in 1821 by James Arnold and purchased by the club in 1919. The club's popularity soared from the 1890s to the mid-1920s when the textile industry was at its height in the city, and cotton was bought and sold by businessmen at the club.
