Philip Santo
Philip Santo (7 August 1818 – 17 December 1889) was a South Australian politician and businessman. History Santo was born at Saltash, Cornwall, and trained to be a carpenter. At the age of 22 he left for South Australia on the ship ''Brightman'', arriving in Adelaide, South Australia, Adelaide in December 1840. He worked as a builder in Adelaide, then Burra, South Australia, Burra. He moved to Melbourne, Victoria, Melbourne during the rush to the Victoria (Australia), Victorian goldfields but soon returned to set up a shop in Grote Street near Victoria Square in 1857, then Waymouth Street from 1866, then from 1873 as Philip Santo & Co in Waymouth Street and Lipson Street Port Adelaide; initially selling timber. then building materials then general hardware, riverboats and ships. Commissioner Of Public Works (South Australia)
The Commissioner of Public Works was a member of Cabinet of the Government of South Australia. Originally created for the Finniss Ministry on 24 October 1856, there were 63 holders of the public works portfolio. It was known as Commissioner for Public Works for most of its existence, however since the Playford Government in the 1960s, it was known as Minister for Works or Public Works. The longest holder was Malcolm McIntosh, a member of the Liberal Federation/Liberal and Country League and a minister in the Butler and Playford governments, who held the portfolio on two separate occasions for a total of 23 years and 45 days. East Adelaide was an electoral district of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1851 to 1857 and an electoral district of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1862 to 1902. First incarnation East Adelaide was a seat of the unicameral South Australian Legislative Council from 1851 until that council's abolition in 1857. The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. Daniel Garlick
Daniel Garlick (20 January 1818 – 28 September 1902) was an architect in the early days of South Australia. During his lifetime, his architectural practice names were Garlick & Son and Jackman & Garlick. After his death his name was perpetuated by two rival firms: Garlick & Sibley and then Garlick, Sibley & Wooldridge; and Garlick & Jackman and then Garlick, Jackman & Gooden (until around 1950, when this firm became Jackman, Gooden & Scott). South Australian Register
''The Register'', originally the ''South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register'', and later ''South Australian Register,'' was South Australia's first newspaper. It was first published in London in June 1836, moved to Adelaide in 1837, and folded into '' The Advertiser'' almost a century later in February 1931. The newspaper was the sole primary source for almost all information about the settlement and early history of South Australia. It documented shipping schedules, legal history and court records at a time when official records were not kept. According to the National Library of Australia, its pages contain "one hundred years of births, deaths, marriages, crime, building history, the establishment of towns and businesses, political and social comment".
