Philip Lansdale
Philip Van Horne Lansdale (15 February 1858 – 1 April 1899) was an officer in the United States Navy. Biography Lansdale, born in Washington, D.C., graduated as Passed Midshipman from the United States Naval Academy, Naval Academy 18 June 1879. Commissioned ensign 1 June 1881, he served on Asiatic Station, Asiatic, North Atlantic Station, North Atlantic, and with the Mediterranean Squadron (United States), Mediterranean and Pacific Squadrons. Promoted to lieutenant 15 May 1893, he became executive officer of USS Philadelphia (C-4), ''Philadelphia'' upon her recommissioning at San Francisco, California, San Francisco 9 July 1898. Norman Eckley Edsall (3 June 1873 – 1 April 1899) was a sailor in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War. Biography Born in Columbus, Kentucky, Edsall enlisted in the U.S. Navy 27 June 1898. While serving on ''Philadelphia'', Seaman Edsall went ashore with a landing party on 1 April 1899 to suppress hostile natives near Vailele, Samoa. He was killed attempting to carry his wounded commander, Lieutenant Philip Lansdale, to safety, and is buried on Samoa. Legacy Two U.S. Navy ships have been named USS ''Edsall'' in his honor. John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Richbourg's highly stylized approach to on-air presentation of both music and advertising earned him popularity, but it also created identity confusion. Vailele
Vailele is a village situated on the central north coast of Upolu island in Samoa. Vailele is in the electoral constituency (''faipule district'') of Vaimauga East in the larger political district of Tuamasaga. The village is less than ten minutes east of the country's capital, Apia. The settlement is north facing and situated in Vailele Bay. Historical In the 1800s, the large Vailele Plantation inland was owned by the German company Deutsche Handels und Plantagen Gesellschaft (DHPG) which employed workers from the Melanesian islands. DHPG was a major plantation owner in Samoa. It had formerly traded in the Pacific as Godeffroys but changed its name and expanded operations in Samoa when the family's parent company in Hamburg became bankrupt. First Battle Of Vailele
During the first Samoan Civil War from 1888 to 1894 German warships shelled and destroyed a large amount of villages loyal to Mata'afa Iosefo. The Samoans were outraged leading to the First Battle of Vailele which occurred on 18 December 1888 at the German plantation of Vailele. around 150 German marines were sent to vailele to try disarm the Samoan Mata'afan forces. They walked right into an ambush set up by an unknown number of Samoan mata afan warriors. 55 German marine were slaughtered by forces loyal to Mata'afa Iosefo. many of the Germans who were killed in Vailele were later found with their heads missing from their bodies.On the same day the Samoans also attacked the Germen plantations at Fagali'i killing 57 German marines. The Samoans also began burning and destroying the German property on the plantations in retaliation of the destroyed villages.
