Philip Jap
Philip Jap is an English singer and songwriter, active in the early 1980s. He released five singles between 1980 and 1983, and one album on the A&M label. Two of his singles made the UK chart in 1982. Early life Philip Jap was born in Camden, North London. Career Jap was a contestant in a TV singing contest hosted by David Essex, titled ''The David Essex Showcase'', and competed alongside acts such as Talk Talk, Thomas Dolby, Amazulu, Toto Coelo, the Belle Stars and Mari Wilson. He released his first single, "Judy in the School for Jiving", in 1980 under the name Philip Gayle, on the PYE label, Blueprint. He scored two UK Singles Chart hits in 1982 with "Save Us" at No. 53 (produced by Trevor Horn), and "Total Erasure" (produced by Tony Mansfield), which peaked at No. 41. Synthpop
Synth-pop (short for synthesizer pop; also called techno-pop; ) is a subgenre of new wave music that first became prominent in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic, art rock, disco, and particularly the Krautrock of bands like Kraftwerk. It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Electronic musical synthesizers that could be used practically in a recording studio became available in the mid-1960s, and the mid-1970s saw the rise of electronic art musicians. Pye Records
Pye Records was a British record label. Its best known artists were Lonnie Donegan (1956–1969), Petula Clark (1957–1971), the Searchers (1963–1967), the Kinks (1964–1971), Sandie Shaw (1964–1971), Status Quo (1968–1971) and Brotherhood of Man (1975–1979). The label changed its name to PRT Records (distributing as Precision Records & Tapes) in 1980, before being briefly reactivated as Pye Records in 2006. Its main plant was situated off what used to be Haig Road, in Cambridge, and it entered the record business when it bought Nixa Records in 1953. Colin Thurston (13 July 1947 – 15 January 2007) was an English recording engineer and record producer. Tony Mansfield
Tony Mansfield (born 19 January 1955) is an English songwriter, musician and record producer. Early work Mansfield was born in Wimbledon, London, and became best known as the main songwriter/producer for New Musik, a synthpop band that performed from 1979 to 1982. Following their debut hit single "Straight Lines" in 1979, the band had three further UK Top 40 hits in 1980 ("This World of Water", "Sanctuary" and "Living By Numbers"), and released three albums: '' From A To B'' (1980), '' Anywhere'' (1981) and ''Warp'' (1982). The group also released a compilation album for the United States in 1981 known as ''Sanctuary'' which consisted of tracks from the first two albums. Trevor Horn
Trevor Charles Horn (born 15 July 1949) is an English music producer, label and recording studio owner, musician and composer. He is best known for his production work in the 1980s, and for being one half of the new wave band The Buggles (with Geoff Downes). Horn took up the bass guitar at an early age and taught himself the instrument and to sight-read music. In the 1970s, he worked as a session musician, built his own studio, and wrote and produced singles for various artists. Horn and Downes gained international fame in 1979 with the Buggles' hit single "Video Killed the Radio Star". This was followed by their one-year tenure with the progressive rock band Yes, with Horn becoming their lead singer.
