Philbrook Farm Inn
The Philbrook Farm Inn is a historic inn on North Road in Shelburne, New Hampshire. At the core of the inn's holdings is a farmhouse whose oldest section dates to about 1834. Operated as a tourist accommodation since 1861, it was for 120 years run by members of the same family. The inn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Philbrook Farm Inn stands in a rural area in eastern Shelburne, on the north side of North Road overlooking the flood plains of the Androscoggin River to the south, as well as portions of the White Mountains. The main building of the inn is a rambling 2-1/2 story wood-frame structure, consisting of a c. 1834 farmhouse with numerous additions. Shelburne, New Hampshire
Shelburne is a town in Coös County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 353 at the 2020 census. It is located in the White Mountains, and part of the White Mountain National Forest is in the south. Shelburne is home to Leadmine State Forest. The Appalachian Trail crosses the town. Shelburne is part of the Berlin, NH– VT Micropolitan Statistical Area. History First granted in 1769 by Governor John Wentworth, the town was named for William Petty Fitzmaurice, Earl of Shelburne. He was a supporter of independence for the American colonies, and at his insistence, King George III recognized the independence of the United States. The town was first settled in 1771, and incorporated on December 13, 1820, when Shelburne voters chose to keep the name. White Mountains (New Hampshire)
The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine in the United States. Meadow Bridge (Shelburne, New Hampshire)
The Meadow Bridge was a historic bridge across the Androscoggin River located on a spur of North Road in Shelburne, New Hampshire. It was a multi-span pin-connected truss bridge that was the first on its site when it was built in 1897 by the Groton Bridge and Manufacturing Co. The bridge consisted of three central through Pratt trusses, one pony Pratt truss, and one steel girder section. The ends of the bridge rested on stone abutments, while the interior spans were supported by circular steel piers filled with concrete and anchored in place by timber piles. The bridge was bypassed in 1984 by a modern bridge. In 2004 it was dismantled and stored on the banks of the river for future rehabilitation.
