Philadelphia Student Union
The Philadelphia Student Union (PSU) is a community organizing and leadership development non-profit organization in Philadelphia. Its stated mission is to build the power of young people to demand a high-quality education in the Philadelphia public school system. The organization claims to address problems of school funding, teacher quality, school climate, and other barriers to education for Philadelphia students, with students themselves as active leaders. The Philadelphia Student Union was founded in 1995. The organization has helped to launch high school students' unions in six other cities, including the Chicago Students Union, Newark Students Union, and Providence Student Union. The organization has been recognized with various awards and honors including a number of Philadelphia Public School Notebook Student Journalism Awards, a Philadelphia Human Values Award, and the Philadelphia Education Fund's EDDY Award. Community organizing is a process where people who live in proximity to each other or share some common problem come together into an organization that acts in their shared self-interest. Unlike those who promote more-consensual community building, community organizers generally assume that social change necessarily involves conflict and social struggle in order to generate collective power for the powerless. Bartram High School
John Bartram High School is a public secondary school serving neighborhoods of the Southwest Philadelphia area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the School District of Philadelphia. History On February 5, 1939, John Bartram High School, located at the intersection of 67th Street and Elmwood Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia, opened for the first time to 1,700 students. The school was named after Philadelphian botanist John Bartram. It was built to relieve overcrowding at West Philadelphia High School due to population increases in the southwest part of the city. Peta Lindsay
Peta Lindsay (born 1984) is an American anti-war activist. She was a presidential nominee of the Party for Socialism and Liberation in the 2012 U.S. presidential election. Early life and education Lindsay was born in Virginia and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. She became an activist as a middle school student with the Philadelphia Student Union, a non-profit organization of students demanding a high-quality education. Soon thereafter she became active with the A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) coalition. Simon Gratz High School Mastery Charter, formerly Simon Gratz High School is a secondary school in Philadelphia, named after Simon Gratz (1840-1925), a member of the Philadelphia Board of Education.
