Philadelphia Pepper Pot
Pepper Pot is a thick stew of beef tripe, vegetables, pepper and other seasonings. The soup was first made in West Africa and the Caribbean before being brought to North America through slave trade and made into a distinctively Philadelphian dish by colonial Black women in the 19th century. It was one of the first street foods, sold by so-called "Pepper Pot women", and was at one point the symbolic food of the city, much like the cheesesteak today. History Origin Pepper Pot shares the same name as soups in the Caribbean but is credited specifically to Black Philadelphians. According to Catherine Clinton, "steaming peppery pot was served right on the street---a dish of vegetables, meat, and cassava, imported by West Indians". John Lewis Krimmel
John Lewis Krimmel (May 30, 1786July 15, 1821), sometimes called "the American Hogarth," was United States, America's first painter of Genre art, genre scenes. Born in Germany, he immigrated to Philadelphia in 1809 and soon became a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Initially influenced by Scotland's David Wilkie (artist), David Wilkie, England's William Hogarth, and America's Benjamin West, he soon turned to direct observation of life for his genre scenes. He was among the first artists in America to portray free blacks, such as in ''Black People's Prayer Meeting'' (1813). Among his still frequently reproduced paintings are ''Independence Day (United States), Fourth of July, Philadelphia City Hall#Site, Center Square'' (1811/12) and ''Election Day in Philadelphia, Election Day'' (1815), both filled with lively characterizations of scores of crowd members. Christopher Ludwick, known also as Ludwig, Ludowick, Ludwigg (17th October 1720, Germany– 17th June 1801, United States) was a German immigrant to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and worked as a baker general for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Biography Life in Europe and Philadelphia Early in life, Christopher Ludwick enlisted in the Austrian Army and served in the Austro-Russian–Turkish War (1735–39), Austro-Russian-Turkish War. He endured the hardships of a grueling seventeen-week-long battle known as the Siege of Prague (1742), Siege of Prague. When the France, French and Bavarians captured Prague in 1741, Ludwick was conscripted into the Prussian Army. When peace was finally declared, Ludwick decided to leave continental Europe. ''Campbell's Soup Cans'' (sometimes referred to as ''32 Campbell's Soup Cans'') is a Visual arts, work of art produced between November 1961 and March or April 1962 by American artist Andy Warhol. It consists of thirty-two canvases, each measuring in height × in width and each consisting of a painting of a Campbell Soup Company, Campbell's Soup can—one of each of the canned soup varieties the company offered at the time.
