Phil Slocombe
Philip Anthony Slocombe (born 6 September 1954) is a retired English cricketer who played for Somerset throughout his career. He was a right-handed opening batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler. He was part of the NatWest Trophy winning team of 1983. Career Born 6 September 1954 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, Slocombe was educated at Millfield School, Slocombe was part of the Somerset Second XI team at the age of 14. He made his first-class debut against Sussex in May 1975, scoring 61 not out batting at number seven. In only his third County Championship match for Somerset, he made his maiden century while playing against Gloucestershire. A further century while opening the second innings against Nottinghamshire helped him become Somerset's first batsman to score 1,000 runs in his first full season. Weston-super-Mare
Weston-super-Mare, also known simply as Weston, is a seaside town in North Somerset, England. It lies by the Bristol Channel south-west of Bristol between Worlebury Hill and Bleadon Hill. It includes the suburbs of Mead Vale, Milton, Oldmixon, West Wick, Worlebury, Uphill and Worle. Its population at the 2011 census was 76,143. Since 1983, Weston has been twinned with Hildesheim in Germany. The local area has been occupied since the Iron Age. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Gloucestershire. Founded in 1870, Gloucestershire have always been first-class and have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club played its first senior match in 1870 and W. G. Grace was their captain. The club plays home games at the Bristol County Ground in the Bishopston area of north Bristol. Brian Rose (cricketer)
Brian Charles Rose (born 4 June 1950) is an English former cricketer, who played in nine Test matches and two One Day Internationals (ODIs) for the England cricket team between 1977 and 1981. Rose was educated at Weston-super-Mare Grammar School for Boys. He trained as a teacher before pursuing a successful county career with Somerset. A left-handed opening batsman, he succeeded Brian Close as captain in 1978, and he led the county to their first ever trophies, the Gillette Cup and the John Player League, in 1979. The team was a potent blend of world-class match winners in Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner, county professionals and keen youngsters. Leicestershire County Cricket Club
Leicestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Leicestershire. It has also been representative of the county of Rutland. The club's limited overs team is called the Leicestershire Foxes. Founded in 1879, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895. The 1976 English cricket season was the 77th in which the County Championship had been an official competition. Clive Lloyd adopted a new approach to Test cricket as a battery of pace bowlers was used to intimidate the England batsmen. Lloyd adopted the tactic after his own team's experiences against Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee the previous year. England's batsmen were no match for Andy Roberts and Michael Holding, but even more worrying was a dearth of effective England bowlers and it was West Indian batsmen like Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge who were the real stars of a long, hot, dry summer. Paddy Clift
Patrick Bernard Clift (14 July 1953 – 2 September 1996) was a Zimbabwean first class cricketer for Leicestershire County Cricket Club, who was educated at St. George's College, Harare. He was a right-armed medium bowler and right-handed batsman. Clift died in South Africa after a battle with bone marrow cancer, in the same year that Leicestershire won the County Championship. Career highlights * In April 1976 he took 8 for 17 for Leicestershire against Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's. He finished the season with 74 wickets at 20.18. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. Eastern Province Cricket Team
Eastern Province cricket team was the former team that represented the Eastern Province in domestic first-class cricket in South Africa, alongside one-day matches. Eastern Province played first-class cricket from 1893–94 to 2004–05, when the team was merged with neighbouring team Border to form the entirely professional franchise the Warriors. From 2004–05 the former provincial teams, such as Eastern Province, were allocated two CSA Provincial Competitions that they could participate in: the CSA 3-Day Cup and the CSA One-Day Cup. Western Province Cricket Team
Western Province is the team representing Western Cape province in domestic first-class cricket in South Africa. The team began playing in January 1890 and its main venue has always been Newlands in Cape Town. Under the reorganisation of professional South African cricket in the 1990s and more recently, Western Province joined with Boland to form the side that now plays in the SuperSport Series under the name Cape Cobras and divides its time between Newlands and the Boland Park ground in Paarl. David Lloyd (cricketer)
David Lloyd (born 18 March 1947) is an English former cricket player, umpire, coach and commentator, who played county cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club and Test and One Day International cricket for the English cricket team. He also played semi-professional football for Accrington Stanley. He is known through the cricketing world as Bumble due to the ostensible similarity between his facial profile and those of the Bumblies, characters from Michael Bentine's children's television programmes. A left-handed batsman and left-arm spin bowler, he played nine Tests, with a highest score of 214 not out, and eight One Day International matches.
