Phil Mitchell (politician)
Philip Anthony Mitchell (born 17 April 1953) is a former Australian politician. He was the Country Liberal Party member for Electoral division of Millner, Millner in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2001, when he was defeated by Matthew Bonson. The Electorate of Millner was named after James Millner (doctor), James Millner, the medical officer in Goyder's 1869 expedition to found the first colony at Port Darwin, who drowned in the SS Gothenburg tragedy. Millner was an electoral divisions of the Northern Territory, electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. One of the Legislative Assembly's original electorates, it was first contested at the first election in 1974. It was named after the suburb of Millner, Northern Territory, Millner, which in turn was named for James Millner (doctor), James Millner, a doctor and early Australian explorer of the Northern Territory who drowned on the ''SS Gothenburg'' tragedy. It was abolished in 2008 and replaced with the new electorate of electoral division of Fong Lim, Fong Lim. Country Liberal Party
The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia, the two partners in the federal coalition. The CLP originated in 1971 as a division of the Australian Country Party (later renamed the National Party), the first local branches of which were formed in 1966. It adopted its current name in 1974 to attract Liberal Party supporters, but maintained a sole affiliation with the Country Party until 1979 when it adopted its current joint association. Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system, having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election, but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024. Matthew Thomas Bonson is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, representing the seat of Millner from 2001 to 2008. Prior to his election, he worked as a local solicitor. He was Minister for Sport and Recreation, Corporate and Information Services, Senior Territorians, Young Territorians and Minister Assisting the Chief Minister on Multicultural Affairs. James Millner (doctor)
James Stokes Millner (1830 – 25 February 1875) was a medical practitioner and administrator in the early history of the Northern Territory of Australia. History Dr J. Stokes Millner (as he was generally known) was born in Birmingham, England in 1830, the second son of Thomas and Eleanor Millner according to the 1841 census. He was educated at Marischal College, University of Aberdeen: licentiate of faculty of physicians and surgeons and was trained as a surgeon. Millner immigrated to Australia in 1855, arriving at Port Adelaide on 24 August aboard the barque ''Lismoyne''. SS Gothenburg
SS ''Gothenburg'' was an iron-hulled sail- and steamship that was built in England in 1854 and sailed between England and Sweden until 1862. She then moved to Australia, where she operated across the Tasman Sea to and from New Zealand until 1873, when she was rebuilt. After her rebuild, she operated in the Australian coastal trade. In February 1875 ''Gothenburg'' was wrecked in a storm on the Great Barrier Reef off the north coast of Queensland. 22 people survived in three lifeboats. Between 98 and 112 people were killed, including a number of civil servants and dignitaries. Building Charles Lungley & Co built ''Gothenburg'' at Millwall on the River Thames.
