Phi Ophiuchi, a name Romanization of Greek, Latinized from φ Ophiuchi, is a single star in the celestial equator, equatorial constellation of Ophiuchus (constellation), Ophiuchus. It has a yellow hue and is faintly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.27. The star is located at a distance of approximately 244 light-years from the Sun based on stellar parallax, parallax, but it is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −33.5 km/s. The stellar classification of Phi Opiuchi is G8+IIIa, an stellar evolution, evolved giant star that has exhausted the supply of hydrogen at its stellar core, core. In 2000, D. R. Alves identified it as a red clump giant on the horizontal branch that is generating energy by core helium fusion. However, S. Ophiuchus (constellation)
Ophiuchus () is a large constellation straddling the celestial equator. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek (), meaning "serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping a snake. The serpent is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. John Flamsteed (19 August 1646 – 31 December 1719) was an English astronomer and the first Astronomer Royal.
