Phantasies
''Phantasies'' is the name of a series of animation, animated cartoons produced by the Screen Gems#Animation studio: 1933–1948, Screen Gems studio for Columbia Pictures from 1939 to 1946. The series, featuring characters such as Willoughby Wren and Superkatt, is notable as being the last theatrical animated series produced in black-and-white by a major studio. To cut costs, Columbia did not move the ''Phantasies'' out of black-and-white until the end of 1946, when it went to all-Cinecolor production. Scrappy
Scrappy is a cartoon character created by Dick Huemer for Charles Mintz's Screen Gems Studio (distributed by Columbia Pictures). A little round-headed boy, Scrappy often found himself involved in off-beat neighborhood adventures. Usually paired with his little brother Oopy (originally Vontzy), Scrappy also had an on-again, off-again girlfriend named Margy and a Scotty dog named Yippy. In later shorts the annoying little girl Brat and pesky pet Petey Parrot also appeared. Huemer created the character in 1931, and he remained aboard Mintz's studio until 1933. With Huemer's departure, his colleagues Sid Marcus and Arthur Davis (animator), Art Davis assumed control of the series. The final regular entry in the series, ''Scrappy's Rodeo'' was released in 1939. Scrappy would continue to appear in the ''Phantasies'' and ''Fables'' series. After George Herriman conceived the ''Krazy Kat'' comic strip in 1913, the title character began appearing in animated shorts three years later. ''The Mouse Exterminator'' is a 1940 short animated film in the Phantasies series, produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures. Willoughby Wren
''Willoughby's Magic Hat'' is a ''Phantasies'' animated short subject directed by Bob Wickersham, produced by Screen Gems, and released to theatres by Columbia Pictures on April 20, 1943. The short features the character of a diminutive, weak man named Willoughby Wren, who finds he is granted super-strength by wearing a cap woven from the hair of Samson. He then uses his newfound powers to save a young woman from the clutches of an evil Frankenstein's monster-like robot, but finds that his powers vanish when the hat falls off or is removed from his head, which seems to happen often. At these times, the announcer would call to Willoughby, "Willoughby! Willoughby! The hat, Willoughby! The hat!" Superkatt
''Superkatt'' is an American cartoon animal comic book series by Dan Gordon (animator), Dan Gordon (under the comics pen name "Dang"), a jab at the “long-underwear” genre of superhero comics. The series stars Superkatt, an anthropomorphism, anthropomorphic cat who wears a bowtie, bonnet, and diaper as a superhero costume. Ron Goulart, author of ''Ron Goulart's Great History of Comic Books'', said that Superkatt was Dang's most memorable comic book character. Denis Gifford, author of ''The International Book of Comics'', said that the character "was as silly as his supercostume." Superkatt was an ordinary housecat who thought that he had superpowers, although all he did was drink vitamin milk. Cinecolor
Cinecolor was an early subtractive color-model two-color motion picture process that was based upon the Prizma system of the 1910s and 1920s and the Multicolor system of the late 1920s and the 1930s. It was developed by William T. Crispinel and Alan M. Gundelfinger, and its various formats were in use from 1932 to 1955. Method As a bipack color process, the photographer loaded a standard camera with two film stocks: an orthochromatic strip dyed red and a panchromatic strip behind it. The ortho film stock recorded only blue and green, and its red filtration passed red light to the panchromatic film stock. In the laboratory, the negatives were processed on duplitized film, and each emulsion was toned red or cyan. ''Krazy Kat'' (also known as ''Krazy & Ignatz'' in some reprints and compilations) is an US, American newspaper comic strip, by cartoonist George Herriman, which ran from 1913 to 1944. It first appeared in the ''New York Journal-American, New York Evening Journal'', whose owner, William Randolph Hearst, was a major booster for the strip throughout its run. The characters had been introduced previously in a side strip with Herriman's earlier creation, ''The Dingbat Family''. ''Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women'' is a fantasy novel by Scottish writer George MacDonald, first published in London in 1858. It was later reprinted in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fourteenth volume of the ''Ballantine Adult Fantasy series'' in April 1970. The story centres on the character Anodos ("pathless" in Greek) and takes its inspiration from German Romanticism, particularly ''Novalis''. The story concerns a young man who is pulled into a dreamlike world and there hunts for his ideal of female beauty, embodied by the "Marble Lady". Anodos lives through many adventures and temptations while in the other world, until he is finally ready to give up his ideals. The edition published in 1905 was illustrated by Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes. C. S.
