Ellen Hart Peña
Ellen Hart Peña (born May 19, 1958) is an American lawyer and former athlete. Career Peña competed in the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000 meter run and the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials marathon. Unfortunately, due to the boycott of the Moscow games by the United States, she did not get to compete at the Olympics in 1980. She won five world titles before the end of her professional athletic career. Peña earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1980 and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Colorado Law School. From 1990 to 1992, she served as Executive Director of the Community Action Program at the University of Denver, a service learning program. She worked as an attorney with the Denver firm of Morrison & Foerster from 1988 to 1990. A made-for-TV movie based on Peña's life was produced in 1996. Nicolás Rodriguez Peña (1775, in Buenos Aires – 1853, in Santiago de Chile) was an Argentine politician. Born in Buenos Aires in April 1775, he worked in commerce which allowed him to amass a considerable fortune. Among his several successful businesses, he had a soap factory partnership with Hipólito Vieytes, which was a center of conspirators during the revolution against Spanish rule. In 1805 he was a member of the "Independence Lodge", a masonic lodge, along with other prominent revolutionary patriots such as Juan José Castelli and Manuel Belgrano. This group used to meet in his ranch, then situated in what today is Rodriguez Peña square in Buenos Aires. José Manuel de la Peña y Peña (10 March 1789 – 2 January 1850) was a Mexican lawyer and judge, who served two non-consecutive, but closely following terms as the president of Mexico during the Mexican American War. In contrast to many other nineteenth century Mexican presidents, he never served in the military, instead coming from a distinguished legal background. He was foreign minister and a member of the peace party whom under the presidency of Jose Joaquin Herrera sought to avoid a war with the United States at a time of rising tensions. After hardliners overthrew Herrera and war broke out with disastrous consequences for Mexico, he was elected president twice to two non-consecutive terms in the final months of the war as peace negotiations were being made.
