Petäjävesi Old Church
The Petäjävesi Old Church ( fi, Petäjäveden vanha kirkko) is a wooden church located in Petäjävesi, Finland. It was built between 1763 and 1765, when Tavastia was still a part of Sweden. The bell tower was built in 1821. It was inscribed in 1994 on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its testimony to the wooden church architecture of the Nordic countries. The church is located about to the west of the centre of Petäjävesi. It is a popular church for weddings in the summer, and there is a church service on most Sundays. History and Construction The church was built as the chapel for the area of Petäjävesi, which has belonged to the congregation of Jämsä. The local people had been given the permission to build a graveyard and a small village church at their own expense by the crown as early as in 1728 because the trip to the nearest church in Jämsä was long, however it took about 35 years until the construction began. Mika Aaltola
Mika Aaltola (born 1969) is a Finnish political scientist and director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. He has gained media attention during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which he follows and regularly comments on. Aaltola holds a doctorate in social sciences. He works as docent at Tampere University, and is a part-time professor at Tallinn University. His sister is philosopher Elisa Aaltola. Biography Aaltola was born in 1969 in Petäjävesi, Central Finland. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Columbia University in New York City. Karikkoselkä
Karikkoselkä is a lake formed in an impact crater in Petäjävesi, Finland. Karikkoselkä is located approximately 30 km east from the centre of Keurusselkä, a much older and larger impact crater. Most lakes in the region are elongated in northwest–southeast direction due to glaciation, but Karikkoselkä is strikingly round. Many shatter cones, rock formations that form under the extreme pressures of impact, have been found around the lake. Further evidence comes from aeromagnetic maps, which show a clear magnetic anomaly in the impact crater area. In addition, samples collected from deep drillings into the lake bottom confirm the impact origin of the structure. The crater is the smallest identified in Finland, 1.4 km diameter and 150 m deep. Due to sediments the lake has a maximum depth of 26m which is unusually deep for a lake in the region. Jarmo Kytölehto (born 23 June 1961) is a Finnish people, Finnish former rally driver from Petäjävesi. He won the Finnish Rally Championship in three consecutive years, first in Group A (1990, 1991) and then in Group N (1992).
