Petro Yefymenko
Petro Yefymenko (or Jefymenko Ukrainian: Петро Єфименко, pseud. Petro Odynets), (2 September 1835, in Velykyi Tokmak, Berdiansk county, Ukraine – 7 May 1908, in Saint Petersburg, Russia) was a Ukrainian ethnographer and historian, statistician by profession. Life and work Petro Yefymenko studied at Kharkiv University until his expulsion (1855-1858) and Moscow University (1858–1859). As a student, he belonged to secret student societies, including Kharkiv-Kyiv Secret Society (1856-1860). In 1860 Petro Yefymenko was accused of Ukrainian separatism. He was arrested and exiled for 10 years to Perm and then Arkhangelsk, Russia. During his exile, Petro Yefymenko collected materials on the local ethnography, folklore and law. Ukrainian ( uk, украї́нська мо́ва, translit=ukrainska mova, label=native name, ) is an East Slavic language of the Indo-European language family. The Zaporozhian Cossacks, Zaporozhian Cossack Army, Zaporozhian Host, (, or uk, Військо Запорізьке, translit=Viisko Zaporizke, translit-std=ungegn, label=none) or simply Zaporozhians ( uk, Запорожці, translit=Zaporozhtsi, translit-std=ungegn) were Cossacks who lived beyond (that is, downstream from) the Dnieper Rapids, the land also known historically as the Wild Fields in what is today central and eastern Ukraine. ''Kievskaya starina'' (russian: Киевская старина, literally "Kievan Past") was a monthly historically ethographic and literary chronicle. It was published in Kyiv during 1882–1907 in Russian, and then in Ukrainian in 1906. In this magazine in 1884 was published the first prose work of Taras Shevchenko, published in Russian language, "Kniahynia" ("The Princess"). In the last year of its existence (1906) when censorship on Ukrainian language was dropped, the periodical was renamed ''Ukraina'' ("Ukraine") and was published in Ukrainian. The monthly chronicle played a major role in development of Ukrainian culture under the conditions of the Russian Empire. Leonid Hlibov
Leonid Ivanovych Hlibov ( uk, Леонід Іванович Глібов ; 5 March 1827 – 10 November 1893) was a Ukrainian poet, writer, teacher, and civic figure. Life Hlibov was born in Veselyi Podil, Khorol county, Poltava gubernia. He graduated from the Nizhyn Lyceum in 1855. In 1858 he began to teach at the gymnasia in Chornyi Ostriv and Chernihiv. He was active in the Chernihiv Hromada, published educational books, and contributed to the Saint Petersburg Ukrainian journal ''Osnova''. In 1861 he founded and became editor of the weekly newspaper ''Chernigovskii listok'', in which he published some of his works. In 1863 the Russian authorities closed down the paper and banned his works. Hlibov was then fired from his teaching job and was forced to live under police surveillance.
