Petite Galerie (Lleida)
Petite Galerie was a short-lived alternative art gallery in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. It existed between 1968 and 1974, during the last years of the Francoist dictatorship, and was especially relevant for being the first of its kind in Catalonia, offering exhibitions of avantgarde art. It was opened as a collaboration between the local branch of Alliance Française, directed by Jaume Magre, and painters Àngel Jové and Albert Coma Estadella. The Barcelona-born artist Antoni Llena debuted there. An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. The long gallery in Elizabethan and Jacobean houses served many purposes including the display of art. Historically, art is displayed as evidence of status and wealth, and for religious art as objects of ritual or the depiction of narratives. Antoni Llena
Antoni Llena (born 1942, Barcelona) is a Spanish artist. A forerunner of conceptual art in Spain, he began his artistic career in the mid-1960s. When he started painting, he was concerned with expressing his historical time, without needing to give up on memories of the past or the desire to affirm the uncertainty of the future. In the late 1960s he completed his well-known series of desiccated sculptures. In 1969, along with Jordi Galí, Silvia Gubern and Àngel Jové, he created ''Primera mort'', considered the first video art piece in Spain. He held his first individual show that same year at the ''Petite Galerie'' in Lleida, where he exhibited silhouettes of the shadows of his paper sculptures, drawn directly on the walls of the exhibition space. The Petite Galerie is a wing of the Louvre Palace, which connects the buildings surrounding the Cour Carrée with the Grande Galerie bordering the River Seine. Begun in 1566, its current structures date mainly from the 17th and 19th centuries. Most of its main floor is now the Galerie d'Apollon, one of the Louvre's most iconic spaces. Lleida (, ; Spanish: Lérida ) is a city in the west of Catalonia, Spain. It is the capital city of the province of Lleida. Geographically, it is located in the Catalan Central Depression.
