__NOTOC__ Petermann is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south of the territory capital of Darwin City, Northern Territory, Darwin in the territory’s south-western corner adjoining the states of South Australia and Western Australia. The locality consists of the following land (from west to east) – the Petermann Aboriginal Land Trust, the Katiti Aboriginal Land Trust and the NT Portion 1798 (better known as the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park), the Land Settlement Aboriginal Corporation and NT Portion 6665 (better known as the Watarrka National Park), the Urrampinyi Iltjiltjarri Aboriginal Land Trust and the pastoral leases of Curtin Springs, Angas Downs and Mulga Park. Katiti Aboriginal Land Trust
The Katiti Aboriginal Land Trust (Katiti ALT) is a land trust for a block of land in the southwest of the Northern Territory of Australia located in the locality of Petermann. It was created through the Katiti Land Claim in 1980. The trust's owners include Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and Luritja people. The block of land is officially referred to as Northern Territory Portion 1818. It borders the larger Petermann Land Trust area and Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa National Park to the north and west, and two pastoral stations to the east and south: Curtin Springs and Mulga Park. The town of Yulara is excluded from the Land Trusts, and sits between the Katiti block and Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Electoral Division Of Namatjira
Namatjira is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was created in 2012 when the former division of MacDonnell was renamed after the Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira. Namatjira is an almost entirely rural electorate, covering 198,384 km², and taking in the resort town of Yulara, the remote communities of Hermannsburg, Kintore and Papunya, and part of southern Alice Springs. There were 5,728 electors enrolled in Namatjira as of August 2020. The seat's first member, Alison Anderson, the former Labor-turned-independent-turned- Country Liberal (CLP) member for MacDonnell, won the seat handily at the 2012 Territory election amid a large swing to the CLP in the remote portions of the Territory. Division Of Lingiari
The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. The current MP is Marion Scrymgour, a member of the Australian Labor Party. Scrymgour herself is Indigenous and inherited Tiwi identity from her mother. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Results from the 2016 census were available to the public on 11 April 2017, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, two months earlier than for any previous census. William Ernest Powell Giles (20 July 1835 – 13 November 1897), best known as Ernest Giles, was an Australian explorer who led five major expeditions to parts of South Australia and Western Australia. Early life Ernest Giles was born in Bristol, England, the eldest son of William Giles ( – 28 May 1860), a merchant, and Jane Elizabeth Giles, ''née'' Powell ( – 15 March 1879). Their family had been in comfortable circumstances but fell on hard times and emigrated to Australia. William Giles was living in North Adelaide by 1850 and Melbourne by 1853. William was later employed by Customs in Victoria, and his wife founded a successful school for girls in that colony. Giles was educated at Christ's Hospital school, Newgate, London. August Heinrich Petermann
Augustus Heinrich Petermann (18 April 182225 September 1878) was a German cartographer. Early years Petermann was born in Bleicherode, Germany. When he was 14 years old he started grammar school in the nearby town of Nordhausen. His mother wanted him to become a clergyman, but his excellence in the drawing of maps and his love for geographic readings made his choice of another career inevitable. Heinrich Berghaus, with support of Alexander von Humboldt, had started the 'Geographische Kunstschule' (Geographical School of Art) in 1839 in Potsdam, close to Berlin, following the example of the school for engravers at the Archives Militaires Generales in Paris (founded in 1811). Petermann Ranges (Australia)
The Petermann Ranges are a mountain range in central Australia. They run across the border between Western Australia and the southwest corner of the Northern Territory. Their highest point is above sea level. The range was formed about 550 million years ago during the Petermann Orogeny. The existing geological research has broadly determined that the ''Petermann Ranges'' were equivalent in height to the Himalayas. The Petermanns were named for the geographer August Heinrich Petermann by Ernest Giles, the first European explorer to visit the area, and are commonly associated with the Yurliya ranges, nearby to the west. The area was included in the Katiti-Petermann Indigenous Protected Area in 2012. Angas Downs
Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) is an Aboriginal Australian-owned pastoral lease, within the MacDonnell Shire area, south-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, east from Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayers Rock), south-east of Kings Canyon/Watarrka National Park and from Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse on the Lasseter Highway. The property is a pastoral lease held by the Imanpa Development Association. It was declared and formally recognised as an Indigenous Protected Area as part of the Australian Government's Caring for Country scheme on 10 June 2009. The property forms part of Australia's National Reserve System. Previous land management practices and other anthropogenic pressures had damaged Angas Downs, and many native species have disappeared. Curtin Springs
Curtin Springs is a pastoral lease operating as a cattle station in the Alice Springs region of the Northern Territory of Australia. Occupying an area of , the working cattle station and roadhouse facility is located on the Lasseter Highway, east of Yulara and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The property shares a boundary with pastoral leases Angas Downs to the north west, Lyndavale to the south east and Mulga Park to the south. It also abuts the Katiti Aboriginal Land Trust to the west. The land was originally known as Mount Conner Station in the 1930s when it was first taken up by Paddy DeConlay. Abraham Andrews leased Mt Conner Station, together with vacant crown land, which became known as Curtin Springs Station around 1956, after John Curtin. Watarrka National Park
Watarrka National Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia located about 1,316 kilometres (817 miles) south of the territory capital of Darwin and southwest of Alice Springs. It contains the much visited Kings Canyon at the western end of the George Gill Range and Kathleen Springs — to the southeast of Kings Canyon. Watarrka National Park was established in 1989 and gets its name from the Aboriginal name of the land.
