''Peteria'' is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. It belongs to the subfamily Faboideae. It is native to USA and Mexico. It is found in the American states of Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. As well as central, north-eastern and Mexico Gulf, in Mexico. The genus name of ''Peteria'' is in honour of Robert Peter (1805–1894), an English-born American botanist, chemist, doctor, zoologist and geologist; founder of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The genus was circumscribed by Asa Gray in Smithsonian Contr. Knowl. vol.3 (Issue 5) on page 50 in 1852. Peteria Thompsoniae
''Peteria thompsoniae'' is a species of flowering plant in the legume family known by the common names spine-noded milkvetch and Thompson's peteria. It is native to the western United States, where it grows in salt desert shrublands in soils of volcanic ash origin, and in alluvial fans. It is a spiny perennial herb growing from a taproot and rhizome system, its stem growing 20 to 60 centimeters tall. The leaves are made up of several pairs of oval leaflets. The inflorescence, a spikelike raceme at the top of the stem, produces white or pinkish pealike flowers up to 2.5 centimeters long, its base encapsulated in a tubular calyx of glandular sepals. The fruit is a leathery, slightly inflated legume pod up to 6 centimeters long. Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. This goal conflicts, at times, with the goal of achieving a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of divergence of groups of organisms. Plants of the World Online (POWO) is an online database published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It was launched in March 2017 with the ultimate aim being "to enable users to access information on all the world's known seed-bearing plants by 2020".
