Peter Sykora (footballer)
Peter Sykora (born 9 October 1946 in Wismar) is a former East Germany, East German association football player who spent the majority of his career with F.C. Hansa Rostock. Until 1965, Sykora played for TSG Wismar, joining the club aged 12. Here he played ten matches in East Germany's second-tier DDR-Liga. Together with his Wismar teammate Klaus-Peter Stein Sykora celebrated his greatest success, winning the title at the UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship, UEFA junior tournament in West Germany in 1965. The East German team beat Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia to advance to the final where the underdogs beat England 3–2 in front of 18,000 spectators in Essen. Between 1964 and 1965 Sykora played in 8 matches with the East German Under-18 national team, until 1969 in another 15 matches for the Under-23 national team. FC Hansa Rostock
FC Hansa Rostock () is a German association football club based in the city of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The club is also called as "the cog" because of its club crest. They have emerged as one of the most successful clubs from the former East Germany after German reunification and have made several appearances in the top-flight Bundesliga. With 21,416 club members, the club is one of the largest sports clubs in Germany. After being in the Bundesliga for ten years, from 1995 to 2005, Rostock suffered a steady decline. The DDR-Oberliga (English: ''East German Premier League'' or ''GDR Premier League'') was the top-level association football league in East Germany. Overview Following World War II, separate sports competitions emerged in the occupied eastern and western halves of Germany, replacing the ''Gauligas'' of the Nazi era. The FDGB-Pokal (Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund Pokal or Free German Trade Union Federation Cup) was an elimination football tournament held annually in East Germany. It was the second most important national title in East German football after the DDR-Oberliga championship. The founder of the competition was East Germany's major trade union. History The inaugural FDGB-Pokal (generally referred to in English as the East German Cup) was contested in 1949, four years before the initial DFB-Pokal was played in the western half of the country. The Bezirksliga ( en, County League) is commonly a medium set of amateur divisions set at steps 7, 8 or 9 in the German football league system. Structure Depending on the structural organisation within each of the 21 state football associations of the German Football Association, the Bezirksliga either falls under the state association's jurisdiction or one of its subsidiary county football associations that organise their divisions mostly following the borders of the corresponding government districts. In the league pyramid, the Bezirksliga always ranks below the superior state association's divisions, typically being the Verbandsliga and the Landesliga but ahead of the district associations' Kreisliga. Sports Associations (german: Sportvereinigung (SV), ) in East Germany were nation-wide sports agencies for certain economic branches of the whole society, which were members of the Deutscher Turn- und Sportbund (DTSB) Members of biggest social employers had their own branch sports clubs or the ''Sportvereinigung''. Central sports associations were set up in East Germany based on the Soviet model as a result of a decision by the German Sport Committee (german: Deutscher Sportausschuss) (DS) on 3 April 1950. The decision envisaged the formation of central sports associations based on the union structure in East Germany, where each sports association represented a trade union area.
