Peter Solan (director)
Peter Solan (25 April 1929 – 21 September 2013) was a Slovak film director and documentarian. He is considered part of the Czech New Wave movement. Solan was born in Banská Bystrica. He graduated from the Prague Film Academy of Performing Arts in 1953. Translated by Martin Votruba. He was given the Igric Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1994, and in 2004 he was awarded the Prize of the Slovak Minister of Culture for Extraordinary Creative Contribution to Slovak Cinema. The Slovaks ( sk, Slováci, singular: ''Slovák'', feminine: ''Slovenka'', plural: ''Slovenky'') are a West Slavic ethnic group and nation native to Slovakia who share a common ancestry, culture, history and speak Slovak. Czech New Wave
The Czechoslovak New Wave (also Czech New Wave) is a term used for the Czechoslovak filmmakers who started making movies in the 1960s. The directors commonly included are Miloš Forman, Věra Chytilová, Ivan Passer, Pavel Juráček, Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec, Jaromil Jireš, Evald Schorm, Hynek Bočan, Juraj Herz, Juraj Jakubisko, Štefan Uher and others. The movement was sometimes called the "Czechoslovak film miracle". Banská Bystrica
Banská Bystrica (, also known by other alternative names) is a middle-sized town in central Slovakia, located on the Hron River in a long and wide valley encircled by the mountain chains of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. With approximately 76,000 inhabitants, Banská Bystrica is the sixth most populous municipality in Slovakia. The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague ( cs, Filmová a televizní fakulta Akademie múzických umění v Praze) or FAMU is a film school in Prague, Czech Republic, founded in 1946 as one of three branches of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. It is the fifth oldest film school in the world. The teaching language on most courses at FAMU is Czech, but FAMU also runs certain courses in English. Art Film Fest, previously known as Artfilm, is an annual international film festival founded in Trenčianske Teplice, Slovakia in 1993, shortly after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The first event was held on 14 June 1993, under the auspices of UNESCO. It is the longest continuously running international film festival in the country. In 2016, 23 years into its history, the festival was relocated to Košice, Slovakia's second largest city. The event traditionally takes place from 14 to 22 June and includes autograph signings, discussions, musical performances, and workshops. History Artfilm was created by film director Petr Hledík, who has been the festival's longtime artistic director.
