Peter Solan (Gaelic Footballer)
Peter Solan (born Peter Michael Anthony Solan; 1929 in Rinnaseer, Islandeady) was a Gaelic football corner forward who played for the Mayo county team and was involved in the county's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) win over Louth in 1950, scoring the first goal in a match that Mayo won by two points. Solan was again involved in the 1951 All-Ireland SFC-winning campaign, helping Mayo all the way to the final. In the Connacht final that year against Galway, he scored 3–1, going on then to score against Kerry in the semi-final. He was named as a sub for the final but did not appear in the team photo. Mayo has lost each All-Ireland Final it has appeared in since. Islandeady
Islandeady () is a village in County Mayo, Ireland, about halfway between the towns of Castlebar and Westport. The parish of Islandeady meets Castlebar to the east, Westport and Newport to the west, and Aughagower and Killawalla to the south. There is a view of Croagh Patrick to the west and Nephin to the northeast. The main route by road is the N5. The parish has four national schools and a private secondary school. History Islandeady parish straddles the baronies of Carra and Burrishoole. Its name was reinterpreted in recent centuries as ''Oileán Éadaí'' but ultimately derives in fact from ''Oileán Éadain'', where ''Éadan'' is a gaelicised form of the Anglo-Saxon name ''Aedwine'' or ''Haedwine''. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The 1950 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 63rd All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1950 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland, between Mayo and Louth. The referee for the 1950 final was Simon Deignan, who played for Cavan in the 1947 and 1948 finals. This was the first of two consecutive All-Ireland football titles won by Mayo. They have not won an All-Ireland football title since 1951. The attendance of 76,174 was the third highest on record in a final at that time. 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 65th staging of Ireland's premier Gaelic football knock-out competition. Mayo won their second All-Ireland in a row. The Curse of '51 Mayo have not won an All-Ireland football final since 1951. Legend has it that a priest became furious when the Mayo team bus returning home from the 1951 final passed by a funeral without showing respect as they celebrated their All-Ireland win. The priest supposedly put a curse on Mayo, that they would not win another title until all of the team had died. Since the deaths of Pádraig Carney in 2019 and Paddy Prendergast in 2021, only one member of the 1951 team remain living – Mick Loftus, though he was a sub and did not play on the day. Prendergast, who was the final surviving member of the team and played at full-back, died at the age of 95 on 26 September 2021.
