Peter Matthews (rebel)
Captain Peter Matthews (1789 - April 12, 1838) was a farmer and soldier who participated in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. He was born in the Bay of Quinte region of Upper Canada around 1789, the son of Captain Thomas Elmes Matthews and Mary Ruttan, United Empire Loyalists with both Dutch and French (including Huguenot) as well as English ancestry. In 1799, the family moved to Pickering Township. Peter Matthews served with Isaac Brock as a sergeant in the local militia during the War of 1812. In 1837, Matthews was active in the political union movement pressuring the British government to grant reforms, and in December of that year, was persuaded to lead a group from Pickering Township to join William Lyon Mackenzie's uprising. Matthews' group of 60 men arrived at Montgomery's Tavern on December 6 and, on the following day, were assigned to create a diversion on the bridge over the Don River. Peter Matthews (born 13 November 1989) is a Jamaican sprinter specialising in the 400 metres. He is an Olympic silver medalist as a member of the Jamaican 4 × 400 m relay team in Rio. He competed at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing reaching the semifinals. In addition, he won the silver medal at the 2011 Summer Universiade. His personal best in the event is 44.69 set in the qualifying round at Beijing in 2015. Sir Peter Jack Matthews (25 December 1917 – 6 January 2003) was a British police officer who rose to become Chief Constable of Suffolk Constabulary and the Surrey Police. He was born at Blackridge, West Lothian, Scotland and educated at Blackridge Public School. In 1937 he joined the Metropolitan Police, but during the Second World War was commissioned into the RAF in 1942 and flew as a pilot until demobilisation in 1946 with the rank of flight-lieutenant. He then returned to the Metropolitan Police to continue his career, rising to Chief Inspector in the early 1950s, and chief instructor at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment at Keston, Kent. Around that time he was seconded to the Cyprus Police, with a team of policemen and a pack of Alsatian dogs, with the task of detecting buried arms and ammunition during the EOKA crisis of 1955. Peter Hugoe Matthews
Peter Hugoe Matthews, FBA (born 1934) is a British linguist and historian of linguistics. He is a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and was formerly Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Cambridge (1980–2000). He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1985. Matthews is perhaps best known for his writings on linguistic morphology. He has published two monographs on the subject. Matthews was an early follower of Noam Chomsky, but lost enthusiasm for the "generative enterprise" during the 1960s. He has described the Chomskyan revolution as "the Best Thing that has happened to linguistics in the past 2500 years". But he also writes, that dominance of various Chomskyan ideas is not "a Good Thing, and I would not be disappointed if my study of their origins were to lead more scholars to question them". Peter Jeffrey Matthews (born 29 July 1942) is a British printmaker, former teacher at Royal College of Art, Royal College of Art (RCA) and senior lecturer at Wimbledon School of Art. Educated at Ealing Art College, Ealing School of Art, Matthews went on to assist at Editions Alecto and editioned most of David Hockney, David Hockney's early etchings. Peter Mathews (born 12 June 1951 in Canberra, Australia) is an Australian archaeologist, epigrapher, and Mayanist. He was a professor at the University of Calgary, and is Co Director of the Naachtun Archaeology Project. Between 1979 and 1986 he taught in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. He was a professor of Archaeology and Maya Hieroglyphs at La Trobe University until his retirement at the end of 2011. He continued to lecture at the university throughout 2012, until his end of tenure in 2013. He graduated with a B.A. in 1975 from the University of Calgary where he studied with David H. Kelley, and Yale University with a MPhil, and PhD, where he studied with Michael D. Coe. During his time at Yale he was a MacArthur Fellowship, MacArthur Fellow, at the age of 33. Peter Bryan Conrad Matthews (23 December 1928 – 2 March 2020) was a British physiologist who made particular contributions to the study of muscle spindles. He was elected as fellow of the Royal Society in 1973. He was the Professor of Sensorimotor Physiology at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Christ Church. Peter Mathews (August 1951 – 27 February 2017) was an Irish economist and politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South constituency from 2011 to 2016. Initially elected as a Fine Gael TD for the Dublin South constituency at the 2011 general election, he lost that party's parliamentary party whip in July 2013. He left the Fine Gael party in October 2013 and sat as an Independent TD for the remainder of the 31st Dáil. Peter Matthews (born October, 1978) is an English artist who has developed a practice of creating drawings while immersed in the ocean and paintings created over days or weeks of being in solitude along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. He works with art materials hiked into the landscape, strapped about his person, hidden in caches along the coast and using found objects on the beach. Since 2007, his drawings made directly in the ocean record the movement of the ocean, the passage and experience of time and the live natural environment that he immerses himself into, often straddling a degree of vulnerability to his being in the process.
