Peter II Of Urgell
Peter II ( es, Pedro, ; 1340 - June 1408) was Count of Urgell from 1347 until his death. Biography He was the eldest son of count James I of Urgell and Cecilia of Comminges, daughter of the count of Comminges and viscount of Turenne, Bernard VII. At the death of his father, he inherited his titles of Urgell, viscount of Àger, baron of Entença and Antillón; as he was underage, his mother acted initially as tutor. In 1363 he married Beatrice of Cardona, daughter of Ugo Folch de Cardona. In 1376 he remarried to Margaret Paleologa, daughter of John II, Marquess of Montferrat. In 1396, after Martin of Aragon had become king of Aragon, he faced Matthew, Count of Foix, who had invaded Aragon, and pushed him back. He died at Balaguer in 1408. Matthew ( 1363 – 1398) was a count of Foix an viscount of Béarn. In 1391. he succeeded Gaston Phoebus, his first cousin once removed, as count. He asserted the sovereignty of Béarn and, as son-in-law of John I, contested the Crown of Aragon with John's brother Martin I from 1396. He and his wife, Joanna, had no children. Accession to office Despite his pursuit for sovereignty, Gaston Phoebus ultimately bequeathed the lordship of Béarn to the king of France. On 8 August 1391, Béarnese leaders duly gathered in Orthez and designated representatives, establishing the Estates-General of Béarn. Martin the Humane (29 July 1356 – 31 May 1410), also called the Elder and the Ecclesiastic, was King of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia and Corsica and Count of Barcelona from 1396 and King of Sicily from 1409 (as Martin II). He failed to secure the accession of his illegitimate grandson, Frederic, Count of Luna, and with him the rule of the House of Barcelona came to an end. John II Palaeologus (5 February 1321 – 19 March 1372) was the Margrave of Montferrat from 1338. Career John was the son of Theodore I of Montferrat, with whom he was associated in the government from 1336. He had great fortune in extending the boundaries of the margraviate against his neighbours. The Comminges (; Occitan/ Gascon: ''Comenge'') is an ancient region of southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees, corresponding closely to the arrondissement of Saint-Gaudens in the department of Haute-Garonne.
