Peter III Of Lugo
Peter III was the Bishop of Lugo from 1113 until 1133. Peter was a chaplain of Queen Urraca (''capellanus regine'') before he was raised to the see of Lugo after the resignation of his ineffective predecessor, Peter II, in 1113. According to the suggestions of the ''Historia compostellana'', Peter III remained closely attached to the queen even after his elevation. He reorganised the chapter of the cathedral of Lugo and began construction on a new building. He was active in acquiring land for his diocese, as well as Papal privileges in 1123 and 1131.Richard A. The (fully titled in la, De rebus gestis D. Didaci Gelmirez, primi Compostellani Archiepiscopi) is an anonymously-written historical chronicle based on the relation of events by a writer in the immediate circle of Diego Gelmírez, second bishop (1100–1120) then first archbishop (1120–1140) of Compostela, one of the major figures of the Middle Ages in Galicia. The narrative of the ''Historia Compostelana'' spans the years 1100 – 1139, the years of Gelmírez' tenure, in three books. Its twofold central agenda is to extol the Archbishop's doings, while establishing the foundation and rights of Santiago de Compostela, including its founding legend, which provided apostolic connections with Saint James the Great. The bishopric had been transferred from Iria Flavia to Compostela as recently as 1095. Saint Mary's Cathedral ( gl, Catedral de Santa María), better known as Lugo Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church and basilica in Lugo, Galicia, north-western Spain. The cathedral was erected in the early 12th century in a Romanesque style, with Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassicist elements. History A church existed in the site from 755. In 1129 Bishop Peter III commissioned a new edifice in the latest architectural style from Raimundo, a local architect and builder. This Romanesque structure was completed in 1273. Later renovations and restorations added elements in other styles, such as the Renaissance retablo at the high altar. It was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and fragments of it are housed in the church. The cathedral received from the Pope the privilege to permanently expose the Holy Sacrament.
