Peter Hoy
Peter Alexander Hoy (born June 29, 1966) is a former relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played briefly for the Boston Red Sox during the 1992 season. Listed at , , Hoy batted and threw right-handed. A native of Brockville, Ontario, Hoy attended LeMoyne College, and in 1987 he played collegiate summer baseball with the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He was selected by Boston in the 33rd round of the 1988 MLB Draft. In five relief appearances, Hoy posted a 7.36 ERA with two strikeouts and two walks in 3⅔ innings of work. He did not have a decision. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. A base on balls (BB), also known as a walk, occurs in baseball when a batter receives four pitches that the umpire calls '' balls'', and is in turn awarded first base without the possibility of being called out. The base on balls is defined in Section 2.00 of baseball's Official Rules, and further detail is given in 6.08(a). It is considered a faux pas for a professional player to literally walk to first base; the batter-runner and any advancing runners normally jog on such a play. The term "base on balls" distinguishes a walk from the other manners in which a batter can be awarded first base without liability to be put out (e.g., hit by pitch (HBP), catcher's interference).
