Peter Hammond (Hammond, Louisiana)
Hammond is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States, located east of Baton Rouge and northwest of New Orleans. Its population was 20,019 in the 2010 U.S. census, and 21,359 at the 2020 population estimates program. Hammond is home to Southeastern Louisiana University, is the principal city of the Hammond metropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Tangipahoa Parish and is a part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Hammond combined statistical area. History 19th century The city is named for Peter Hammond (1798–1870), the surname anglicized from Peter av Hammerdal (Peter of Hammerdal) — a Swedish immigrant who first settled the area around 1818. Peter, a sailor, had been briefly imprisoned by the British at Dartmoor Prison during the Napoleonic Wars. He escaped during a prison riot, made his way back to sea, and later on arrived in New Orleans. Hammond used his savings to buy then-inexpensive land northwest of Lake Pontchartrain. Peter Francis Hammond
Peter Francis Hammond (June 30, 1887 – April 2, 1971) was a politician and member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio for two months from November 1936 to January 1937. Biography Born in Lancaster, Ohio, he attended a private Catholic high school and entered college in Columbus, Ohio at Pontifical College Josephinum, Josephinum College. A tailor by trade, he opened his own clothing store in 1913. On November 3, 1936, Hammond was victorious in a special election to fill the remaining term of Mell G. Underwood. He served as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat for several months, but did not run in the election held the same day for the following term. Following this, he briefly returned to his store, before becoming postmaster of Lancaster, Ohio in 1938. He retired from this position in 1954.
