Peter Burton (writer)
Peter William Burton (29 April 1945 - 7 November 2011) was an English journalist, publisher, editor and author, considered "the Godfather of gay journalism."'''' Personal life Burton was born 29 April 1945 in Hackney, London. In his first memoir, ''Parallel Lives'', published in 1985, Burton wrote, "From about the age of 13, I had two ambitions: to leave school, and to leave home. Both were accomplished before I was 16 – and essentially, since then, I have been master of my own fate. And things have happened." He was aware he was homosexual in his teens and shortly after began visiting gay pubs in London's West End. Although homosexuality was illegal at the time, Burton said he never worried about whether his sexuality was "'right' or 'wrong' – because it seemed perfectly natural." Hackney, London
Hackney is a district in East London, England, forming around two-thirds of the area of the modern London Borough of Hackney, to which it gives its name. It is 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Charing Cross and includes part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Historically it was within the county of Middlesex. Faces (band)
Faces are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of Small Faces after lead singer and guitarist Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces—Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (electric bass, vocals), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)—were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces. The band had a unique arrangement, as Rod Stewart had signed a separate solo recording contract with the Mercury label shortly before joining the group, which was signed to Warner's. Band members often contributed to Stewart's solo albums as contract players, and Faces live shows of the period would feature as much of Stewart's solo material as that of the band, which later fuelled tensions amongst them when they began to effectively be viewed as Stewart's 'backing band'. Ian Young (writer)
Ian Young (born January 5, 1945) is an English-Canadian poet, editor, literary critic, and historian. He was a member of the University of Toronto Homophile Association, the first post-Stonewall gay organization in Canada. He founded Canada's first gay publishing company, Catalyst Press, in 1970, printing over thirty works of poetry and fiction by Canadian, British, and American writers until the press ceased operation in 1980. His work has appeared in '' Canadian Notes & Queries'', ''The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide'', ''Rites'' and ''Continuum'', as well as in more than fifty anthologies. He was a regular columnist for ''The Body Politic'' from 1975 to 1985 and for ''Torso'' between 1991 and 2008. ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. The ''Daily Express'' is a national daily United Kingdom middle-market newspaper printed in tabloid format. Published in London, it is the flagship of Express Newspapers, owned by publisher Reach plc. It was first published as a broadsheet in 1900 by Sir Arthur Pearson.
