Peter Beer (judge)
Peter Hill Beer (April 12, 1928 – February 9, 2018) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Education and career Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Beer was a sergeant in the United States Army toward the end of World War II, from 1945 to 1946. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Tulane University in 1949 and a Bachelor of Laws from Tulane Law School in 1952. He was a captain in the United States Air Force JAG Corps from 1952 to 1955. He was in private practice in New Orleans from 1955 to 1974, serving on the New Orleans City Council from 1969 to 1974, including service as vice president from 1972 to 1974, and as acting president from 1973 to 1974. He was a judge of the Louisiana Court of Appeals from 1974 to 1979, and of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1978 to 1979. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. James Earl Carter Jr. (born October 1, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he previously served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967.
