Peter Allen (born Peter Richard Woolnough; 10 February 1944 – 18 June 1992) was an Australian singer-songwriter, musician and entertainer, known for his flamboyant stage persona, boundless energy, and lavish costumes. His songs were made popular by many recording artists, including Elkie Brooks, Melissa Manchester and Olivia Newton-John, including Newton-John's first chart topping hit "I Honestly Love You", and the chart topping and Academy Award winning "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" by Christopher Cross. In addition to recording many albums, he enjoyed a cabaret and concert career, including appearances at the Radio City Music Hall riding a camel. His patriotic song "I Still Call Australia Home", has been used extensively in advertising campaigns, and was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2013. Peter Edwin Allen (born 4 February 1946) is an English radio broadcaster with 40 years' experience in journalism. He has been with BBC Radio 5 Live since it started in 1994, and co-presented the ''Drive'' programme for 16 years from 1998 to 2014. Early life Allen was born in Rochford, Essex, and attended the independent Brentwood School. At 18 he left school and started work with his local newspaper. He emigrated to Australia and worked for the Sydney ''Daily Telegraph''. Broadcasting career In the 1970s Allen switched to working in radio, joining Independent Radio News, the newly launched news service for UK commercial radio. Murder Of John Alan West
The murder of John Alan West on 7 April 1964 was the crime which led to the last death sentences being carried out in the United Kingdom. West, a 53-year-old van driver for a laundry company, was beaten and stabbed to death by Gwynne Evans and Peter Allen, who had gone to rob him at his home in Seaton, Cumberland. Both murderers were unemployed, had a history of petty crime and were arrested and charged within two days of the crime. At trial, each blamed the other, but the jury found both men guilty, and both were sentenced to death. The use of capital punishment in the United Kingdom had been declining at the time, and public opinion was turning against the practice. As a result, the decision not to reprieve the two condemned came as a surprise. Both were executed at 8:00 am on 13 August 1964, in prisons in Manchester and Liverpool. Peter Allen (born Harold Levy; September 17, 1920 – October 8, 2016) was a Canadian-born American broadcaster and radio announcer, noted for hosting the Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera for some 29 years. Early years Allen was born Harold Levy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada He later moved with his parents to the United States, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Allen was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jesse Hall "Pete" Allen (May 1, 1868 – April 16, 1946) was a professional baseball player whose career spanned two seasons, including a part of one in Major League Baseball with the Cleveland Spiders (1893). Allen played one game in the majors and went hitless four at-bats. In that game, Allen played catcher. He also played in the minor leagues with the Binghamton Bingoes (1893) and the New Castle, Pennsylvania baseball team (1895). During Allen's time in the minors, he played catcher and outfielder. An associate of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers, his compositions encompass a broad repertoire from film scores and commercial jingles to sacred music and avant-garde electroacoustic music. Peter Allen (born March 6, 1970) is a Canadian former ice hockey defenceman. He played 8 games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1995–96 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1993 to 2004, was mainly spent in the minor leagues and then in Europe. Peter Charles Allen (1 November 1946 – 5 February 2023) was an English footballer who played as a midfielder, and is the current holder of Leyton Orient's all-time appearance record.
