Peter Philip Smith OAM is an Australian former radio and television voice-over artist. He is primarily known for his work with GTV-9 Melbourne as their announcer, including being the announcer on the nationally screened quiz show ''Sale of the Century'' for 21 years. Life and career Early life Smith was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and educated at Wesley College, Melbourne. Radio Upon leaving school, Smith joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a messenger boy before progressing through the ranks to an announcer on the home service and Radio Australia. On radio in the 1960s, Smith worked with radio station 3AK as a "good guy" and on Greater 3UZ as it was known during the 1970s. Pete Smith (basketball)
Pete Smith (born 1947) is an American former professional basketball player. Smith was born in Albany, Georgia, and grew up in the rural southern area of the state. He joined the Cincinnati Bearcats to play college basketball but returned to Georgia without playing due to homesickness. Smith instead played for the Valdosta State Blazers, where he was the first black athlete in the school's history. He led the team in points, and set school records for most field goals attempted and best rebound average during his only season with the Blazers. Smith was drafted by the Buffalo Braves as the 197th overall pick of the 1971 NBA draft. He played five games in the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a member of the San Diego Conquistadors during the 1972–73 season. Smith spent time in training camp with the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) but never played in an NBA game. Peter Luke Smith (born March 19, 1940) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from to for the Boston Red Sox. Listed at 6' 2", 190 lb., Smith batted and threw right-handed. A native of Natick, Massachusetts, he idolized Bobby Doerr as a child and graduated from Natick High School in 1957 before attending Colgate University. At Colgate, Smith played baseball and soccer and ran cross country. He set a NCAA record by striking out 23 batters in a game against Bucknell. In a two-season career, Smith posted a 0–1 record with a 6.75 ERA in seven appearances, including two starts, giving up 14 runs on 18 hits and eight walks while striking out seven in innings of work. Peter John Smith (born February 27, 1966) is a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher, born in Abington, Massachusetts. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round (21st overall pick) in the 1984 Major League Baseball draft. Peter Schmidt (September 4, 1892 – January 12, 1979), known professionally as Pete Smith, was an American producer and narrator of short subject films. A native of New York City, Smith began working as a publicist at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the 1920s. He later became involved with movie making. He is best known for his series of short movies, the ''Pete Smith Specialties'', which were produced from the 1930s to the 1950s. Smith produced and narrated more than 150 short movies which earned him two Best Live Action Short Film Academy Awards. In 1953, he was awarded an Academy Honorary Award for his short subjects. Smith's later years were spent in a Santa Monica convalescent home due to ill health. In January 1979, Smith jumped to his death from the roof of the home. Pete Smith (1 May 1944 – 26 March 2021) was a British cyclist. He competed in the team time trial at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Smith was a member of the Clifton Cycling Club in York with whom he won the team title in the British Best All-Rounder competition in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969 and broke team competition records at 25, 50 and 100 miles and 12 hours. In individual events, Smith broke the British 50-mile record twice in 1967, the 100-mile record in 1969, and won the mountains classification in the 1968 Tour of Morocco. He rode professionally in the early 1970s for Clive Stuart, TI–Carlton, Falcon–Tighe, Bantel and TI–Raleigh. Peter Arthur Smith (born 11 July 1942, in Hanworth, England) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England, who spent his entire career with the Poole Pirates. Career Smith began riding speedway motorcycles at the training track at Rye House Stadium in the early 1960s. In 1962, Smith took part in a number of second-half meetings at Poole and made his first full appearance for Poole at a challenge match at Rye House. He continued to improve at Poole and by 1968, Smith had become the Pirates third heat-leader. Poole won the British League championship in 1969 and Smith rose to the number one position at the club with an average of 9.52. Smith also made his first international appearances for England in 1969 against Australia, New Zealand and Scotland. He was made Poole's captain in 1971 and continued to ride for the club until his retirement from the sport in 1977.
