Pete Galligan
Peter F. Galligan (January 20, 1860 – May 20, 1917) was an American politician who also played Shortstop in Major League Baseball in one game for the 1886 Washington Nationals. Galligan was born in Chicago, Illinois and went to Saint Ignatius College. After his brief appearance in the majors, he played in the Western Association in 1888, the Central Interstate League in 1889 and the Chicago City League in 1891. He also worked in the manufacturing business. Galligan served briefly as a patrolman for the police force before he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, where he served from 1897 to 1899 and from 1909 to 1913 and was a Democrat. Shortstop
Shortstop, abbreviated SS, is the baseball or softball fielding position between second and third base, which is considered to be among the most demanding defensive positions. Historically the position was assigned to defensive specialists who were typically poor at batting and were often placed at the bottom of the batting order. Today, shortstops are often able to hit well and many are placed at the top of the lineup. In the numbering system used by scorers to record defensive plays, the shortstop is assigned the number 6. More hit balls go to the shortstop than to any other position, as there are more right-handed hitters in baseball than left-handed hitters, and most hitters have a tendency to pull the ball slightly. The Minneapolis Millers were an American professional minor league baseball team that played in Minneapolis, Minnesota, through 1960. In the 19th century a different Minneapolis Millers were part of the Western League. The team played first in Athletic Park and later Nicollet Park. History The name Minneapolis Millers has been associated with a variety of professional minor league teams. The original Millers date back to 1884 when the Northwestern League was formed. This league failed and the Western League replaced it, absorbing some of the old teams. According to Stew Thornley, this team folded in 1891 due to financial problems. In 1894, another team calling itself the Millers was formed when Ban Johnson and Charles Comiskey revived the Western League in hopes of making it a second major league.
