Peru At The Olympics
Peru has officially participated in 19 Summer Olympic Games and 3 Winter Olympic Games. They did not send any athletes to the 1952 Summer Olympics. The Peruvian Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee for Peru which was founded in 1924 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1936. Peru's first official appearance at the Olympic Games was at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. However, prior to the creation of the Peruvian Olympic Committee in 1924, the Peruvian Carlos de Candamo competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics in two fencing events of foil and épée. Peru's first participation in the Winter Olympic Games occurred during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Peru has won a total of four medals, three in shooting events and one in volleyball. Their only gold medal was won by Edwin Vásquez in the 1948 Summer Olympics in the Men's 50 metre pistol. The remaining three medals were silver. The Peruvian Olympic Committee (, COP) is the National Olympic Committee representing Peruvian athletes in the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games. Edwin Gonzalo Vásquez Cam (28 July 1922 – 9 March 1993) was an Olympic sport shooter from Peru. He won a gold medal in the 50 m pistol event at the 1948 Summer Olympics, his country's only Olympic gold medalist so far. 1936 Summer Olympics Medal Table
The 1936 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in Berlin, Germany, from 1 August to 16 August. Berlin had previously been chosen to host the 1916 Summer Olympics, which were subsequently cancelled due to the First World War. The 1936 Games had 3,963 athletes from 49 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participating in a total of 129 events in 19 sports. This was the highest number of nations represented at any Games to date. Athletes from 32 NOCs won medals, of which 21 secured at least one gold medal. As a result, 17 NOCs were left without any medal. The host NOC, Germany, received a total of 89 medals, a record for a united German team, although East Germany broke that record in 1976, 1980 and 1988. Peru competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. 40 competitors, all men, took part in 16 events in 8 sports.
