Perth International Jazz Festival
The Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is an annual jazz festival event held over three days in early November. This jazz festival incorporates both ticketed and free community events. Its location over the festival weekend spans across the CBD of Perth, the cultural precinct area of Northbridge, through to Hyde Park in the City of Vincent. History The Perth International Jazz Festival was founded by associate professor and jazz pianist Graham Wood. Wood served as Festival Director until his death in 2017 and was replaced by Mace Francis. The first festival in 2013 was ranked 4th in ''Time Out'''s "Top 7 Australian Jazz Festivals" (August 2013) and featured in the West Australian's Art's "Best in the West" (2013). The lineup featured international acts such as Joe Lovano, Katie Noonan and Vince Jones, local jazz performers like Jamie Oehlers and Libby Hammer, and jazz-based organisations such as WAYJO, WAAPA and JazzWA. Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state) living in Greater Perth in 2020. Kristin Berardi
Kristin Berardi, who originates from Koumala, Queensland, is an Australian jazz singer. Her album with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, ''Kristin Berardi Meets the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra'', was nominated for ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2011. She won the International Vocal Competition of the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006. Berardi's version of "Strangers in the Night" was used as background music in a television advertisement for Audi automobiles in 2020. Alexandre Da Costa
Alexandre Da Costa is a Canadian concert violinist and conductor from Montreal, Quebec. He is the artistic director of the ''Orchestre Symphonique De Longueuil''. Education Da Costa has a bachelor's degree in performance (piano) from the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal and master's degree in violin. He also studied violin at the Reina Sofía School of Music. Career Da Costa is both a conductor and a virtuoso violinist who plays with a 1727 Stradivarius Di Barbaro violin using a Sartory bow. In 2010, he won the Canada Council, Canada Council's Virginia Parker Prize, Virginia Parker prize and has also won the Pablo Sarasate International Violin Competition. St George's Cathedral, Perth
St George's Cathedral is the principal Anglican church in the city of Perth, Western Australia, and the mother-church of the Anglican Diocese of Perth. It is located on St Georges Terrace in the centre of the city. On 26 June 2001 the cathedral was listed on the Western Australia Heritage Register with the following statement of significance: History Built between 1879 and 1888 the cathedral was situated at the corner of St Georges Terrace and Cathedral Avenue at the heart of Perth's heritage precinct, which includes the nearby Treasury Buildings and the town hall. Juliana Areias
Juliana Areias (often referred to as The Bossa Nova Baby) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter based in Australia. She is best known for her Bossa nova-style and her album Bossa Nova Baby, released in 2015. She has toured internationally and also recorded six albums with Márcio Catunda. Early life Areias was born in São Paulo and exposed to music from a young age. As a teenager, Areias met Ruy Castro, a journalist known for documenting much of the early Bossa nova movement. She attributes Castro and her direct exposure to the movement as her inspiration to become a singer. It was also Castro who originally gave her the nickname "The Bossa Nova Baby." The French Quarter, also known as the , is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. Brookfield Place is a skyscraper within the Brookfield Place office complex in Perth, Western Australia. It is currently the second tallest building in Western Australia. Barney McAll
Barney McAll (born Melbourne, Australia, 1966) is a jazz pianist and composer who lives in Melbourne, Australia. McAll joined Gary Bartz's band in 1997, and has also played with the Josh Roseman Unit, Fred Wesley and the JB's, Groove Collective, and Kurt Rosenwinkel's "Heartcore". He completed his Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, and studied in New York and Cuba. Barney is the brother of pianist John McAll. His ensembles include M.O.D.A.S, GRAFT, ASIO (Australian Symbiotic Improvisers Orbit), and Non-Compliance. His most recent ensemble is Precious Energy, which features members from Hiatus Kaiyote, Laneous, and Rita Satch. Richard Bona
Richard Bona (born 28 October 1967) is a Cameroon-born American multi-instrumentalist and singer. Early life Bona Penda Nya Yuma Elolo was born in Minta, Cameroon, into a family of musicians, which enabled him to start learning music from a young age. His grandfather was a griot – a West African singer of praise and storyteller – and percussionist, as his mother was a singer. When he was four years old, Bona started to play the balafon. At the age of five, he began performing at his village church. Not being wealthy, Bona made many of his own instruments: including flutes and guitars (with cords strung over an old motorcycle tank). His talent was quickly noticed, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and ceremonies. The Perth Cultural Centre is an area of central Perth, Western Australia, near the James Street Mall. Lisa Scaffidi
Lisa-Michelle Scaffidi (; born 12 February 1960) is a former Lord Mayor of Perth, Western Australia. The first female Lord Mayor of Perth, Scaffidi became mayor following the October 2007 council elections, after the retirement of her predecessor, Peter Nattrass, who served a record twelve years in the position. Scaffidi and the rest of the City of Perth council were suspended on 2 March 2018, while the state government investigated the council's operations.
