''Personal Column'' (french: Pièges) is a 1939 French thriller film directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Maurice Chevalier, Pierre Renoir, Marie Déa and Erich von Stroheim. It was shot at the Joinville Studios in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Maurice Colasson and Georges Wakhévitch. ''Lured'', an American re-make, directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lucille Ball, was released in 1947. Plot After one of her fellow taxi dancers is murdered by an unknown man whom she met through a personal column ad, Adrienne Charpentier is recruited by the police to answer a series of similar adverts to try to track down the killer. She meets and falls in love with the charming nightclub owner and womanizer Robert Fleury, but clues begin to appear that suggest that it is he who is the murderer. Robert Siodmak
Robert Siodmak (; 8 August 1900 – 10 March 1973) was a German film director who also worked in the United States. He is best remembered as a thriller specialist and for a series of films noirs he made in the 1940s, such as ''The Killers'' (1946). Early life Siodmak was born in Dresden, Germany, the son of Rosa Philippine (née Blum) and Ignatz Siodmak and the brother of Curt, Werner and Roland. His parents were both from Jewish families in Leipzig (the myth of his American birth in Memphis, Tennessee was necessary for him to obtain a visa in Paris during World War II). He worked as a stage director and a banker before becoming editor and scenarist for Curtis Bernhardt in 1925 (Bernhardt directed a film of Siodmak's story ''Conflict'' in 1945). Joinville Studios
The Joinville Studios were a film studio in Paris which operated between 1910 and 1987. They were one of the leading French studios, with major companies such as Pathé and Gaumont making films there. A second studio was added to the original in 1923. This was located less than a kilometre away, and together the two served as a major filmmaking hub. After the Second World War the studio was merged into the Franstudio network in 1947 along with other major Paris studios including the Saint-Maurice Studios and Francoeur Studios. In the early 1930s, the American company Paramount Pictures took over the studios and made French-language versions of their hit films. A taxi dancer is a paid dance partner in a partner dance. Taxi dancers are hired to dance with their customers on a dance-by-dance basis. When taxi dancing first appeared in taxi-dance halls during the early 20th century in the United States, male patrons typically bought dance tickets for a small sum each. When a patron presented a ticket to a chosen taxi dancer, she danced with him for the length of a song. She earned a commission on every dance ticket earned. Though taxi dancing has for the most part disappeared in the United States, it is still practised in some other countries. Georges Wakhévitch
Georges Wakhévitch (russian: Георгий Леонидович Вахевич; Georgy Leonidovich Vakhevich; August 18, 1907 in Odessa, Russian Empire – February 11, 1984 in Paris) was a Russian-born French art director. The son of a naval engineer, he immigrated to France in 1921. He grew up in Paris, where he studied painting. He was an assistant to film director Lazare Meerson in the 1920s. Wakhévitch also designed sets and costumes for the theatre, the ballet, and the opera. His designs usually used vivid colours and successful sets for Covent Garden included '' Boris Godunov'', '' Otello'', ''Die Meistersinger'' and London's first ever staging of Verdi's '' Macbeth'' in 1960.
