''Perfect Strangers'' is an American sitcom that ran for eight seasons, from March 25, 1986, to August 6, 1993, on the ABC television network. Created by Dale McRaven, the series chronicles the rocky coexistence of midwestern American Larry Appleton ( Mark Linn-Baker) and his distant cousin from eastern Mediterranean Europe, Balki Bartokomous ( Bronson Pinchot). Originally airing on Tuesdays for the short six-episode first season in the spring of 1986, it moved to Wednesdays in prime time in the fall of 1986. It remained on Wednesdays until March 1988, when it was moved to Fridays. The show found its niche there as the anchor for ABC's original '' TGIF'' Friday-night lineup, though it aired on Saturdays for a short time in 1992. Jesse Frederick James Conaway (born June 25, 1948) is an American film and television composer and singer. He wrote and performed the themes to TGIF television shows such as '' Perfect Strangers'', '' Full House'', '' Family Matters'', and '' Step by Step'' for ABC. Early years Jesse Frederick James Conaway was born in Salisbury, Maryland, but was raised in Seaford, Delaware. He was the younger of two children. His brother, Everett Thomas (Tommy) Conaway, Jr. (1944–1956), died of cystic fibrosis at age 12 years. In his early childhood, Jesse was familiarly known as "Freddy" before he started using the middle name Frederick in his later teens. Balki Bartokomous
Balki Bartokomous is a fictional character played by Bronson Pinchot in the television sitcom '' Perfect Strangers''. He is from the fictional island of Mypos, which is near Greece and based on Greek culture. Character history Pinchot was first approached by producers Tom Miller and Robert Boyett to play the role of an immigrant to the United States in a show tentatively titled "The Greenhorn." He initially refused, not wanting to play another character similar to "Serge"—his role in '' Beverly Hills Cop'', who also has an unusual accent. He reconsidered after returning from a trip to Greece and decided to base the character and the fictional island of Mypos on the people he encountered in the villages of Greece.
