Pere Marquette
Jacques Marquette S.J. (June 1, 1637 – May 18, 1675), sometimes known as Père Marquette or James Marquette, was a French Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan's first European settlement, Sault Sainte Marie, and later founded Saint Ignace. In 1673, Marquette, with Louis Jolliet, an explorer born near Quebec City, was the first European to explore and map the northern portion of the Mississippi River Valley. Early life Jacques Marquette was born in Laon, France, on June 1, 1637. He came of an ancient family distinguished for its civic and military services. Marquette joined the Society of Jesus at age 17. He studied and taught in France for several years, then the Jesuits assigned him to New France in 1666 as a missionary to the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Pere Marquette State Trail
The Pere Marquette State Trail is a bicycle and multi-use trail in lower Michigan, running through Clare, Lake, and Osceola Counties. Intersecting with the White Pine Trail in Reed City, the trail is paved in areas, with a ballast or cinder surface elsewhere. The trail's western terminus is the Village of Baldwin with the City of Clare as its eastern terminus. From Baldwin east to The Pere Marquette State Trail is open to non-motorized uses. Except for a gap at its eastern end as the trail enters the City of Clare, it is developed on a former railroad bed. From the City of Clare southeast to Midland, the trail continues as the Pere Marquette Rail Trail. Historical background The Pere Marquette Railway ran trains along the route, west past Baldwin to Ludington and east to Saginaw. The ''Pere Marquette'' is a passenger train operated by Amtrak as part of its Michigan Services on the route between Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois. It is funded in part by the Michigan Department of Transportation and is train 370 eastbound and train 371 westbound. The westbound train leaves Grand Rapids during the morning rush, with the eastbound train leaving Chicago after the afternoon rush, enabling same-day business travel between the two cities. The train is named for a named train of the defunct Pere Marquette Railway, and in turn for Pere Marquette, Michigan, an early name for Ludington. The town was named for Father Jacques Marquette, a French explorer of the Great Lakes region. The ''Pere Marquette'' was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Pere Marquette Railway and its successor the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) between Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan. It operated from 1946 to 1971. It was the first new streamliner to enter service after World War II. Although discontinued in 1971 on the formation of Amtrak, in 1984 Amtrak revived the name for a new train between Chicago, Illinois and Grand Rapids. History The Pere Marquette Railway introduced the ''Pere Marquette'' between Detroit's Fort Street Union Depot and Grand Rapids Union Station on August 10, 1946. The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail (PMRT) is a rail trail in Michigan occupying a abandoned CSX railroad corridor in Midland County and Isabella County that was once part of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad. In 1874, the tracks stretched from Ludington to Flint, transporting supplies to the timber industry in southern Michigan's mills. The Pere Marquette Railway operated in the Great Lakes region of the United States and southern parts of Ontario in Canada. Ludington, Michigan
Ludington ( ) is the largest city and county seat of Mason County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 8,076. Ludington is a harbor town located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River. Many people come to Ludington year round for recreation, including boating and swimming on Lake Michigan, Hamlin Lake, and other smaller inland lakes, as well as hunting, fishing, and camping. Nearby are Ludington State Park (which includes the Big Sable Point Light), Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, and Manistee National Forest. Pere Marquette Beach
Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, Michigan is a park comprising of public beach on Lake Michigan. In 2004 the beach appeared on lists of certified clean beaches published by the National Healthy Beaches Campaign and the Clean Beaches Council. This city park, located on Lake Michigan, offers a wide expanse of beach, playground, volleyball courts, a restaurant, access to lighthouses and the Muskegon Channel, also the site of the "USS Silversides," a World War II Submarine, and nearby, a full-service restaurant and bar. The beach is also home to the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail, a trail connecting Pere Marquette Beach with Downtown Muskegon, as well as connecting with other northerly trails. The beach is also known for having a very large sand area. Muskegon also has two other beach parks, Harbour Towne Beach and Kruse Park. Kruse Park is the only beach in Muskegon County to allow dogs.
